haiku friday

i can't get enough
of my two little besties.
they just make my day.

she's got those light eyes.
and the best disposition.
and a squishy bod.

then, my brave buddy.
who loves everyone she meets
always wants to play.

On mammograms & biopsies & whatnot

Last week, while I was just reading about the changes that these jokers up in Washington were trying to make to healthcare I got crazy mad!

I just had a mammogram three weeks ago and I was thinking while I was having my boobs squashed into the machine how thankful I was for the healthcare I have.

Early detection of breast cancer is critical!

I ended up having to have three biopsies last week for things that were "highly suspicious," and that sucked. The actual procedures were no walk in the park; they were scary and they hurt. The women who worked at the clinic were really helpful, professional and kind.

Waiting for the results was no picnic either. Babe and I went and were so relieved to find out I didn't have cancer, it didn't really matter what else she said. I knew whatever the results were, we would figure it out, but uncertainty around health issues is heavy stuff.

I have to have surgery in the next couple of months and will meet for a consultation at the end of this month, but that sounds like a cakewalk compared to all the steps I would have had to take if it turned out to be cancer.

Whatever else you learned from this story, you should now know that things I consider easy are a walk in the park, a picnic and a cakewalk.

You're welcome.

I yanked this out of my backyard yesterday and put it in a frittata. I used the below recipe and it was so good.

  • Ingredients
  • 1 red potato, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 bunch Swiss chard, leaves removed and roughly chopped
  • 8 eggs
  • Pinch of salt
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  1. 1.
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Put the diced potato in a small bowl, cover with a plate, and microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes, until tender when pierced with a fork.
  2. 2.
In a large (12-inch) skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes, then add the garlic and cook for a minute more. Add the chard and a splash of water, cover, and cook until the chard is completely soft. Add more water if necessary if the skillet is too dry and the chard is still tough. Before proceeding, cook off any leftover moisture, and allow to cool.
  3. 3.
In a large bowl, whisk the eggs with the salt and cheeses, then stir in the chard and onion mixture and the potatoes.
  4. 4.
Heat the butter in a medium skillet or small pan over medium heat until foaming, then add the egg mixture. Cook until the bottom and sides begin to set, then transfer to the oven and continue cooking until the center is solid, 5-15 minutes depending on the shape of the pan. Allow to cool somewhat before serving.

On growing up Catholic

Just kidding, this isn't about that.

This is about Lent, one of my favorite traditions. Do you know me? Then you know I love little games of deprivation. Deprivation Games.

I try to challenge myself for Lent because it is a finite way to get rid of something that has become a habit. I usually give up candy and something else, like beer. This year I should give up wine and Facebook but then what would I have left in life?

So, I'm giving up candy and Ritz. What's that you say? Ritz? Why on earth would anyone ever need to give up something like Ritz?

At my house, we buy Ritz at Costco and those buttery, flakey treats are my go to for any mealtime. Not so healthy, not so wise.

Candy is a no brainer, no one needs it and I won't miss it. But I do eat it and so not eating it is better than eating it.

So there you go. No mas Ritz. See you in Easter you crispy devils.

February Check in

  • 10,000 steps a day: I nailed it again! Every day in February.
  • Drink less wine & more water: I did so so on this one. We had a lot of guests this month which means more wine.
  • Get more sleep - see above note. I don't think I did as well with this in February, but I did change the settings on my phone so at 10pm the lighting switches to night time, thus indicating it is time to go to bed. I think I'll see progress on this in March.
  • On my 52 political actions, from the top:
  1. Marching in protest
  2. Calling my senators not to confirm Davos
  3. Donating to the ACLU
  4. Reached out and chatted with angry, conservative donor
  5. Sent email to Feinstein about why I marched
  6. Donated to Chris Murphy from Connecticut
That's it! I need to double up here. I am falling behind!
