haiku friday

my desk is messy
so is my email machine
and my purse is too.

but, my hair is clean,
i have a new outfit on,
and it is Friday.

balance is the key.
if you're desk is messy then
your hair must be clean.

field trip

Buddy is going on a field trip in May to the LA Zoo. I remember going to the zoo, too, though I think it was the Santa Barbara zoo. We were older than kindergarten, though, and I remember Rolf Hansen threw up in front of the flamingos.

She's so excited about it. She told me all about it the other night. I can't tell you how fun it is to listen to her talk about things I know nothing about - she's actually sharing the information with me. So serious! She has a permission slip and really, really needs me to sign it.

Buddy has always been quite the talker, everyone here knows that. But these days she's telling me all the stuff she learns and I love it too many. Did you know lady bugs are beetles? She also showed me how ants breathe. And they have a head, thorax and abdomen.

Buddy can read a lot now and is good and writing, too. It seems to me she is better at math, but I'm not sure if that is true.

The kindergarten teacher is funny and calm, and Buddy has really benefited from that. She told me in our parent teacher conference that Buddy is one of the few kids who gets her jokes and understands her sarcasm. The teacher is not big into the behavior cards they use at school but for what its worth Sasha has had excellent behavior every single week since school began.

The other day one of my friends asked me if I was sad that Buddy was going to be done with Kindergarten and on to first grade. I hadn't given it any thought, to tell you the truth. But now that I am thinking it over I wouldn't say I'm sad about it, per se. It is such a special time and she has had so much fun in it. I hope first grade doesn't disappoint.

lots to see weekend pics

Last weekend, we spent time in Moorpark and La Canada, two very different parts of the LA Area.
This weekend we were in Torrance and Malibu, also very different.
We went to the South Coast Botanical Gardens and saw the lego exhibit. It was great fun, really relaxing and beautiful.
I had to work Sunday, but I worked at this tony house in Malibu, that used to be owned by Steven Spielberg. Here's me drinking champagne.

The trees at the garden were outstanding.

On the election

Well, one of my blog readers weighed in, asking why haven't I talked about the presidential election, saying it is not like me at all.

Too true.

If you look back over the years, and during the different elections, I definitely weighed in frequently on the topic of the presidential elections.

This year, I had my head in the sand for most of 2015.

I just could never really believe that Trump would be the nominee. It just didn't make any sense to me. When I finally woke up and smelled the racism, I mean the coffee, it was just about the beginning of 2016. Donald Trump should never be allowed to be the president.

He is a lying liar who lies and he's racist.

And the fact that millions and millions of voters are selecting a man who wants to close our borders to certain populations, who believes that women who get abortions should be punished, and who has a huge problem with immigrants from all places, but particularly Mexico, well it just makes me sick to my stomach. What is a matter, America? Why so racist?

On the whole Hillary/Bernie thing. Well, I just feel sort of let down to tell you the truth. I really believe this is Hillary's raise to win (to lose?) and we should just be backing her as the democratic party.

Those are a few of my thoughts, in a nutshell. We can talk more about it as the weeks go on, but fair warning. It makes me feel depressed. I'll share some photos of children soon to lighten the atmosphere.

Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

Yesterday

  • You heard about my yesterday, in South Gate.
  • I also had an "all advancement staff meeting" which is for the 500 fundraisers that work here at USC. Crazy, right? There are 500 of us! We just reached the 5 Billion dollar mark in our campaign. You read that right.
  • I also filmed my little video for the Furman Center's 20 year anniversary
Today

  • I have no meetings today and a list as long as Josie's arm to work on. Most of our office is still in NYC so I have the opportunity to get a bunch of stuff done. Muy bien.
Tomorrow
  • Tomorrow is my official 20th anniversary with Babe! Get out! We started going out on April 8, 1996, and we were 18 years old. Now, we are 38! Hey Babe! We'll probably go out after work with our little children. My vote is California Pizza Kitchen, because that was our first date.

a few things i learned today

I went to a small round table today to listen to the mayor of South Gate talk about some things. Never heard of South Gate? Well, you're probably not alone. It's a small city in LA County, to the south and east of downtown.

  • There are 96,000 people in South Gate.
  • 95% of is latino.
  • The mayor of south gate received the largest number of votes for a mayor in South Gate, ever. He received 2,154 votes. How's that for voter turnout? 3% of the population voted him in. Talk about the need for more civic engagement.
  • He has a day job, like most mayors of these small cities do. He gets paid $600 a month to be on the city council.
  • He is focusing on "redefining 90280" because he learned, like many of us know, people can tell a whole lot about your life outcomes based on the zip code in which you grow up. He said according to the researchers he was listening to, people from 90280 will grow up to be obese, diabetic or pre-diabetic, and have asthma. He grew up in South Gate. He is obese, diabetic and has asthma. So there you have it. That's what I learned today.
