Oboes & Retreats

A retreat when I was a youth meant going off into the woods and learning about Jesus, but really making out with boys. (Sorry, mom.) (And Babe.)

At every job I've ever had (except one) summertime has meant "retreat time."

So we retreat - which means at least a five hour planning session where you set lofty goals for the year to come with few strategies to achieve them.

Now that I run a bunch of boards, I have more than one of these a summer. So that's what I've been up to lately.

What a digression!

I meant to tell you that Buddy is getting big and so now she says a lot of things correctly.

She still has a few that are awesome like for "elbows" she says "oboes."

And, she doesn't really understand how to talk about things in the past so everything is either "yesterday" or "when I was a baby."

She still says "muse-skit" for "music."

She used to call her "ankles" her "bumps," but now they are her ankles.

Anyways, have a good day. I will be in a retreat. Very likely retreat planning for my next one in two weeks. And sharing lessons from the one I had four weeks ago.

Rainbow Rowell

I recently read two books by Rainbow Rowell that I must recommend you purchase immediately, especially if you love any of the following things (preferably at least two of them):
  1. 80s movies
  2. Funny people
  3. First love
  4. Pop culture
  5. Witty writing
Don't like those things? What on earth are you doing reading this  blog, then? (Haha, that was my attempt at number 5.)

Anywho, Eleanor and Park is a story about true love and punk rock music. It is set in the 80s and could have made a very good John Hughes movie. Right? He's the one who made Sixteen Candles? Just read it.

I just finished this little number. It's mostly email between two besties and reminds me a lot of me and BFF's im exchanges, meaning full of hilarious wit and snappy comebacks. It's 1.99 on kindle right now, so if you have one - download it. You'll thank me later!

The Dresden

Totally, Mr. Ly, the Dresden was the bar from Swingers!

The other day, I went to some book signing thing in Los Feliz (a neighborhood in Los Angeles) and my coworker and I were a little early. So, we went to grab a drink. And we saw the Dresden! Which I knew about from the movie Swingers. It is a huge, dark bark. Very old glamour. Not glamorous anymore.

I took these photos:

Check the schooly lights. And you can see the cartoon pictures on the wall.

Check the white leather booths!

And the wee Dresden tiles.

Well, then, Babe and I went there on a date and we got to see the famous Marty and Elayne perform. It was a great night. I recommend going there.

Here's one of the scenes from Swingers, but I can't tell which one because I try not to watch movies at work. Haha.

the good, the bad, the ugly

the good

  • summertime: bbqs, beeday parties, picnics, beachytimez, day trips.
the bad
  • summer colds, a lot of work, no real vacay
the ugly
  • seriously - the world. i cant get over this crazy conflict in gaza. i'm not going to say anything here, this is, after all, a place to relax on the web, but come on you guys. it's really, really bad. ugh. i feel like so many bad things are happening around the world all at the same time and there is just not one thing i can do about it.

Buy local

When I was reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, Babe kind of wanted to murder me. It's all about trying to minimize the amount of travel your food has to do to get to you by eating local.

Right? Because if your peach is flying from Ecuador, it's probably not very fresh anyways. Also think of the jet fuel and pollution.

Anyways, I live in California so a lot of this is somewhat moot because our food doesn't have to travel very far in most cases. Except for bananas, but I digress.

I laid off the local thing a bit (I was becoming a little psycho), but I do have a farmers market a five minute walk from my house every Saturday morning. With all the fruit we consume in my little family, it makes good sense to make the trip.

Like this past Saturday, when me and Buddy walked over and purchased our strawberries, peaches, zucchini, grapes and onions.

How self congratulatory was I, then, when peaches from Trader Joe's, Costco, Ralph's and Food 4 Less were all recalled this week because of possible Lysteria contamination. Gross dude. Peaches! UGH is nothing sacred?

Swim Lessons!

Dude, so the public pool by my house has swim lessons for "Tiny Tots" from 4 - 6 years old. A half hour, every day for two weeks. Only $40! So cheap!

Buddy had her first one yesterday.

Parents have to stay out of the way. I had to hold on to the bars of the fence (this picture is taken through the fence) so as not to FREAK OUT AND GO GET MY BABY OUT OF THE POOL. She was fine. She was having so much fun! She's the tiniest tot on the far right.

After swim warm up hug.

What all the fuss was about

Here's a nice story from USC News about the conference yesterday featuring FLOTUS:

Bonus that you can see her dress!

I got to shake the first lady's hand and take a picture with her! This conference was super hard to put together so I'm glad I got to meet her, it made it all worthwhile. I think it was a win for my school, too, and for veterans in Los Angeles.

She was so nice, by the way. She is a very warm person and looks right in your eyes when she meets you. She is tall and beautiful and gracious. And her speech was terrific.

In any case, I'm taking a couple of days off work to bum around. Me and Buddy are watching cartoons today and may go to a park later. Or not, we'll see.

I think one of my most treasured and favorite values is Integrity.

Here's a definition: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

Here is a quote about integrity:

Funny enough by Michelle Obama!

There's your daily inspiration! Tomorrow we have our big summit which is featuring FLOTUS herself. After that, I will have more regular blog posts. Thanks for hanging in there, chaps!

Wknd Photos

The park around the corner has this cute wee wading pool for the children and they fill it up in the summer. It's perfectly buddy size.

Walking path by our house.

We bought some more plants this weekend. We're kind of addicted.

This plant is CARNIVOROUS!!! Isn't it crazy?

Mr. Softie

We had a date and went for a drink at the Dresden Room. It was cool.

The Beyonce Voter

Read this article about: Getting to Know the 'Beyonce Voter' which is pretty funny. The term was coined by some guy on Fox News:
“I call them the BeyoncĂ© voters, the single ladies. Obama won the single ladies by 76 percent last time, and they made up about a quarter of the electorate. You know, they depend on government because they’re not depending on their husbands,” said contributor and noted Lady Expert Jesse Watters. “They need things like contraception, health care, and they love to talk about equal pay.”
And then, check out this tumblr site full of Beyonce lyrics over awesome ladies.

4 year check up

Member these from when you were a kid? Little hearing tests. Ack. She did great.

Eyes tested, too.

Clean bill of health.

Three ouchie shots. Yuck. But she was a champ.

She's in the 90% in height and between 50 and 75% in weight.

Buddy is 3 and a half feet tall and 37.8 pounds.

I'm gonna squeeze her!!!

Three year anniversary of living in California passed and I didn't even say anything!

Yesterday was our third year anniversary of living in California!

What a nice place to live, I must say. I think the best part about it is being close to family. The second best thing about it is my backyard and chilling there. I also really, really like going to the beach.

Heck yes I miss the NYC peeps and food and seasons. I miss the subway! I miss the FC!

But it's been an amazing move for us. Buddy has so many gramas and grampas and aunties and cousins and friends and she has a big old backyard to play in. Now, she goes to school down the street and I think she's going to love it there.

Three years! Here's to many, many more!

first day of school

Getting her bag ready.

Ready for her day!

And one more.
Walking to school.
Bye mom!

Yeah, so I wept uncontrollably. But she is fine.
