Haiku Friday

Boxes, Buddy, Work.
That's what my week has been like.
Little worker bee.

Vacay mode for Bud.
Parks and popsicles and shows.
And visitors, too.

Been working a lot.
More on my job than my house.
Such is life I think.

Haiku Friday

Every night I read
a couple of books before
she goes off to bed.

Last night, she asked for
me to read The Giving Tree.
So, I acquiesced.

From page one, I cried.
Bawled. Tears streaming down my face.
Hiding that book now.

Moving

It's move-in day here on campus and all the parental units are dropping off their children to live in the dorm. Definitely takes me back to that summer of '95 where my mom and dad drove me up to Berkeley.

I can't really even count the times I have moved since then. I mean, I guess I could but the number is not really that important. A lot of times. It was every year for awhile.

A few big moves, too. I moved in with Babe, that was a big move. Then, we sold all of our stuff and moved across country. Drove coche out there. Then nearly a decade later, we moved back. That  move, two years ago, was so big. We had all of our stuff shipped and then got one way tickets from NYC to San Diego.

This move to our new house is altogether different. That move from NYC, I had taken a whole month off work and we just had a little baby. This move, across town, I have so much work to do and have a three year old. I never would have known this at the time but its much easier to move with a baby.

Anyways, it's going great. We are almost packed and we have movers. I am working from home all week next week and will be able to unpack and play with buddy.

I got nothing

Seriously.

Even my words with friends games are too much at this point.

Next week, I'll be in my new house unpacking and playing with the Buddy. There's a little something that fills me with gladness.

Haiku Friday

Building happiness.
That has been my theme this week.
Brick by brick by brick.

I have a castle,
complete with turrets. A moat.
A work in progress.

It's a nice image.
A castle of happiness.
Built up brick by brick.

Thursday

Today, so far, I have:

  • Gotten Buddy ready for the day and dropped her at daycare.
  • Gotten myself ready for the day, too.
  • Drove to my new house for the final walk through. Everything looks GREAT.
  • Met with a house painter and talked through what I was looking for. (Estimate to be received Sunday evening.)
  • Talked to my boss on the phone.
  • Talked with my Ma on the phone.
  • Spent an hour and a half waiting to get my car smogged.
  • While waiting to get coche smog tested, I had a call with a donor, and two more calls with my coworkers.
  • I also researched and booked a house cleaner for the new pad.
  • I got the car smogged and she passed!
  • I got a bagel and a coffee from Tanners.
  • I returned a swimsuit to big five.
  • I threw in a load of laundry.
And now I am home, and it is 12:30.

I won't tell you what I have planned for the rest of the day, but it includes continuing to work from home, clean up my pad, call the bed place about bed delivery, and see Stretch Armstrong.

Happy Thursday, ya'all!

10 years ago today!

Ten years ago today I was chilling in a beautiful house in East Oakland waiting for my then fiance to arrive from NYC. I had arrived a few days prior with my sister and her tiny baby who is now ten.

Allz of a sudden there was a freaking CRAZY BLACKOUT and Babe was stranded!! He totally waited in an hour long line for a payphone to call me with an update, then walked for hundreds of miles (nope, but many blocks), got an airporter bus and went to the airport. Unbelievable but true, JetBlue was the only airline running their own generator and he was able to fly out. Many, many, many hours later. He had gone out the night before for a bachelor party type thing and was in terrible shape, mind you. It was very hot in NYC and he had very little sustenance. But he made it! Man I wish I had more time to tell you that whole story, and better.

Here are some pictures from the blackout of 2003.

Weekend Pics

From the car, sitting in traffic. I was, not the blimp.

I totally remember going to the bank with my mom when I was a kid. So, I was super stolked to take buddy with me there on Saturday. She didn't disappoint.

Something  buddy is not so cut out for? (Sorry about my english there.) Mattress shopping. This is her with one of the insert displays, behind the desk with the guy.

So then I took her to yogurt land.

Then we found this cool sleep center part where we could play in relative privacy.

And take selfies.

Happy 8th birthday to my sweet nephew, Ben. I love you pal.

Haiku Friday

Hello there, blog friends!
We are off to sign our loan
papers this morning.

I am excited.
To become a homeowner.
Stop paying for rent.

Tossing two grand out
(more actually) each month
has lost its appeal.

Jury Doodie

I have jury duty this week, but you'd never know it. Because I'm here at my desk. The way it works here is every night you call this special phone number and they tell you whether you have to report the next day. It reminds me a lot of that line from Princess Bride: Good night, good work. I'll most likely kill you in the morning.

I don't mind jury duty, at all. I was on a trial once when I was a kid and it was a good experience. Probably more for me than the other folks on the jury being that I was 18 and I knew nothing about anything.

What I don't like is the uncertainty. I cleared my schedule this week (SO FANCY, RIGHT?!) and so I have zero appointments - which is kind of the opposite of what you're supposed to do in my line of work (fundraising). Anyways, I keep wondering - what if I check on Thursday night and they're like you have to report tomorrow, Friday and then I get on a jury? And I have lots on my schedule for next week.

Oh my, sorry about this post: the most boring post you've ever had to read.

House Update

  • We're moving in two and a half weeks.
  • We bought a house, sort of unexpectedly. We had hoped to buy a house next summer, when Buddy turns four, so she would be in a good area to go to school. But, I was at dinner with a friend of mine from New York who said: Hey, do you want to buy a house in the South Bay? And I said, not really. How much? And she gave me the price, and it was right smack dab in our wheelhouse. So we said yes. Houses for sale in my current neighborhood are in the 800,000 range, and this is about half of that.
  • It wasn't listed or anything, so we shaved off a pretty penny because of no broker fees.
  • It's a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom itty-bitty house built in the late 80s, about 8 miles south of where I live now. It is 3 miles from the ocean and a half a block from one of the best public schools in southern California.
  • The schools are excellent, up til the 8th grade. And they are currently in the process of building a high school.
  • The neighborhood is mostly families, it seems. Because of the school district there are lots of kids. It is close to many, many, many mega retailers. Not so much walkable.
  • What else can I tell you? I'm excited.

Aren't you just the most gorgeous?
I'm a lucky gal.
