Happy Beeday, Gabs!

Happy beeday, Gabs!
To my oldest friend, thanks for sticking by me even though you knew me when I was the most awkward human on the planet/ie a 7th grader.
Here's to getting in to more trouble now that we're old ladies than we did when were teenagers!!
Love you girl!

weekend pics

Here's a pic of the palm tree in my backyard.
You heard me.

Here's what I think. There's nothing in the world better than having a 2 and a half year old. I'll probably feel the same way when I have a 3 and a half year old and so on, but right now, I am in heaven.

Sorry about my finger in this pic. It's Buddy and the C-man looking at a slug. Heh.

Playing.

We took her highness, queen of the buddies, to the dmv parking lot so she could learn how to drive. I have a video, obviously.
She sings while she is riding around.

Although she clearly sometimes loves to have her picture taken,

Sometimes she says NO MORE MAMA. And hides her face.

Thus making it difficult for me to get a picture of her pigtails.

We also had date night and supper club this weekend and both were awesome.
Happy Monday, peeps!

Haiku Friday

"Experience is
something you don't get until
after you need it."

Saw that yesterday.
It resonated with me,
because of my job.

I have lots to learn.
And plenty of room to grow.
See how I spun that?

Random Recipe Thursday

I made a rendition of Emeril's Winter Beef Stew on Tuesday night and I will share it here with you, with my changes of course. Link to the original here. My changes will be featured in CAPITAL LETTERS so it seems like I am yelling at you.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces (I ONLY HAD A POUND AND THAT WAS FINE. I MEAN FOR GOODNESS SAKES, THERE ARE ONLY 2 OF US. PLUS BUDDY BUT SHE WASNT SO HIP TO THE STEW THING.)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon Essence, recipe follows (LAST TIME I MADE MY OWN ESSENCE. I DID! WHAT A KISS-ASS, HUH? THIS TIME I USED MCCORMICK'S STEAK SEASONING.)
  • 3/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 pound button mushrooms, thinly sliced (GROSS I LEFT OUT OBVIOUSLY)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups veal or beef stock, at room temperature (I USED CHICKEN BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I HAD)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste (NOPE, DIDN'T HAVE ANY.)
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 pound small (golf ball size) new potatoes, quartered
  • 1 cup diced carrots (OR A COUPLE OF HANDFULS OF BABY CARROTS)
  • 1 cup frozen pearl onions, thawed (ONE SHALLOT, DICED)
  • 1/2 cup frozen green peas, thawed (HOW ABOUT A TURNIP? I HAD ONE SO I USED IT.)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves (BABE HATES PARSLEY. SO DO TIGERS.)

Directions

Set a 12-inch saute pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of the olive oil to the pan and season the beef with 1 teaspoon of the salt, 1 teaspoon Essence and 1/2 teaspoon of the black pepper. Sear the beef (in 2 batches) in the saute pan for about 2 or 3 minutes per side. YES. THIS IS WHAT I DID. THEN, I TOSSED THE MEAT IN THE SLOW COOKER AND ADDED THE ONIONS AND STOCK TO THE FRYING PAN TO GET ALL THE YUMMY BITS UP. THEN, I POURED IT INTO THE SLOW COOKER.)
Add the butter, mushrooms, flour, veal stock, tomato paste, herbs, spices, and browned meat to a slow cooker. WOW: I DIDN'T EVEN SEE THIS: Cover the slow cooker and set the temperature to high. Cook for 1 hour! I ADDED THE POTATOES AND TURNIPS AND CARROTS AND COOKED ON LOW FOR LIKE 9 HOURS. IT WAS FREAKING DELICIOUS. I'M NOT GONNA LIE. Add the potatoes and carrots and continue to cook the stew for another 7 hours. During the last hour of cooking, add the pearl onions and replace the lid. Once the stew is cooked, stir in the peas and parsley and serve immediately.

Emeril's ESSENCE Creole Seasoning (also referred to as Bayou Blast):
2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme
Combine all ingredients thoroughly.
Yield: 2/3 cup
Recipe from "New New Orleans Cooking", by Emeril Lagasse and Jessie Tirsch, published by William Morrow, 1993.

January

January has got to be one of my favorite months, hands down. I love a fresh start:  the first of the month is one of my favorite days and I even love Mondays.

What's matter with me, I know!

This month feels like a whole month full of firsts. I almost wrote this month feels like a whole month full of Mondays but then I think that doesn't sound very nice.

Let's talk through some highlights of January:

  • The inauguration which qualifies as one of the best events ever. And, for the record - I loved the first lady's dress, loved Obama's speech, and could care less if Beyonce lip synced. She's so pretty.
  • Ang's beeday which was a weekend-long free-for-all involving ice cream sandwiches and sea otters.
  • Two trips to San Francisco. One for fun and one for work next week.
  • The New Year's holiday and the MLKJ holiday, both which yield three-day weekends with which I can enjoy my little family for an extra day.
  • January brings copious amounts of dieting and self-reflection, easily two of my all-time favorite past times. I just couldn't love dieting any more than I do. Why? It's maybe the same reason I love Mondays. Cuz I am a crazy person masquerading as a sane one. Have I fooled anyone? And don't even get me started on self-reflection. Oh the lists! Oh the magic of crossing things off and setting goals for yourself that may never be achieved!
  • Football playoffs.
  • In addition to Martin Luther King Junior and Ang, Jan also hosts Gab's beeday. We don't usually speak of such things though.
There! What did I miss??

Weekend List

Happy Birthday, Ang! It was Ang's Birthday weekend, in addition to being MLK Jr day and the Inauguration. We had some fun.

Birthday cake face.

My parents just moved to Escondido where they are now blissfully close to the Stone Brewery.

On MLK J Day, we took a trip to the rad Long Beach Aquarium where I was astonished by the sea creatures. And a little grossed out by these horse shoe crabs.

Buddy eating pomegranate seeds.

Dementors.

The two chirrun.

Buddy's first movie!!

Hi Mr. Sea Otter.

Happy baby.

Sitting peacefully. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Mama and Buddy and Jellyfish.

Yah!

Resting peacefully.

Amazing Jellyfish

Auntie.

Haiku'in it on a Friday

Well, what do you know.
The weather got warm again.
And I am happy.

I get it, New York.
Fifty isn't really cold.
Except when it is.

Also, I live here.
Sunny California.
Not freezing NY.

Hey

Sorry about the weird, random short posts lately.

I come up with great ideas as I'm falling asleep at night then by the morning they are gone. I used to write my blog in my head on the subway on the way to work, but now I drive so I can't. Or I don't.

Did you see that the dad from Different Strokes died? Me and Ang totally used to watch that show and I always remember when the sister washed her hair with rain water and it turned her hair green because of Acid Rain. Do you remember that? Also, do you remember acid rain? That was a thing in the 80s that we feared? Sort of like the Soviet Union?

I think today is the anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake. This has been coming up a lot lately, earthquakes, and my kit is only about 10% finished. As in I have three flash lights and a jug of water.

Wknd Pics

What a fun weekend! Auntie was in town for part of it.

We went to the promenade and the Disney store!! Look at all those princesses!

Yah.

We checked out this place called Coolhaus where they have ridiculously good ice cream.

See? Ice cream sandwiches. I'm eating Key Lime Pie ice cream with a snickerdoodle. Buddy's eating strawberries and cream. Ang, a traditional ice cream sandwich.

Ready for a trip to the museum!

We checked out the La Brea Tar Pits museum because entrance came free with our Natural History membership. Very small and nice museum. They also have a rad hill to learn how to roll down.

Dig.

Get a load of this mammoth, ya'all! Wow!

Did you hear me peeps?

Blah blah blah forms.

Wow! This is boring!

The truth is out there

Sick day part deaux

So, I kept Buddy home again today. I think she is fine but she just looks a little sad to me. I felt bad thinking about her running around with all those kiddos.

I feel sort of guilty about taking the day off work but what are you gonna do?

It's still super early in 2013 but I have to say this year feels like it's going to be genius.

Is that how you guys feel?

I meant to share this pic with you the other day of Buddy getting ready for school.

Sick day

Took buddy for her check up today! She is perfect. They also found out she has a little fever. I thought she felt a little hot this am!!

So, I guess we'll just have to hang out today. :D

Random Recipe Tuesday

You've seen this before, but it is SO GOOD I am posting it here again in the hopes that you will make, thank me and invite me over to eat it.

Chicken Posole
  • 1 can (15 oz) white hominy, drained (I use a big can)
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) Mexican style diced tomatoes (I used stewed tomatoes)
  • 1 can (10 oz) enchilada sauce (recipe calls for mild green, I used medium red)
  • 2 carrots, diced (toss a bunch of baby carrots - who dices?)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced (ha! Minced. That's funny.)
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 5 chicken thighs (I've been using chicken boobs of late, because that's what I have. Doesn't matter.)
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Tortilla chips
  1. Combine everything but cilantro and tortilla chips in the crock pot. Cook for 3 - 3 1/2 hours on high.
  2. Shred the meat up a little bit, throw the cilantro in, give it a stir and serve it with some tortilla chips on the side. YUM!
  3. I haven't done that cilantro/tortilla chip thing this time but it sounds good! Go for it!

Weekend Pics

This is the story of me taking a quick trip to San Francisco, to see GUS and meet a new baby, and take in some street art and good food and drink. And walk around and enjoy Gus's neighborhood, the Mission.

There's me and GUS.

There's the pretty City of San Francisco.

Did I miss my two buddies a lot when I was gone? You bet I did.

Did I cry a little bit? Yup.

But, I also got to spend some time with my Twin.

And get a squeeze from jojo.

And meet Amadis and Tricia's baby Ezra. Who I wanted to take.

But didn't because look at this family!

I also saw some funny and strange art, including this bathtub which had the same James Brown duck that I have in my bathtub. Go figure.

The ride to the airport.

Cheers! Thanks San Francisco! Great 36 hours!!

Numbers - 2013 edition

(Based on a similar post last year!)

Five best things about 2012 as inspiration for 2013 (in no particular order):

  1. Getting this new job at USC.
  2. Going to BON's wedding in Brooklyn in June.
  3. Celebrating almost every birthday of each of my family members with them.
  4. Losing twenty pounds by eating better and moving more and drinking more water than anyone ever intended.
  5. The two big parties I hosted this year - Buddy's number 2 birthday and Babe's number 35 birthday. Backyard, babies, buddies.
Four general plans for 2012

  1. Keep reading, but read better books that I can talk with other people about, not the crap I've been reading.
  2. Drink less booze and even more water.
  3. Enjoy 30 minutes of activity every single day.
  4. Try out a new skin care regiment. (HA!)
Three places I plan to go in 2013

  1. San Francisco for a solo trip, but ideally I'd like to with my little family this summer.
  2. To three Yankees games in Socal: Padres, Angels, Dodgers.
  3. Somewhere new that I've never been.
Two career goals for 2013

  1. Kick ass at this current job and really get a handle on what it means to do what I am doing.
  2. Meet with at least 3 people a week.
One change I'd like to make in 2013

  1. Save more money every month by making a budget and sticking to it.
