Inspiration (BFF LOOK AWAY)

I was sitting here working, trying to figure out what I ought to blog about today when the answer literally flew in my face. I heard this scratching sound and lo! Here's a bird outside my window.

Dude, I'm on the 15th floor here and that's a small bird.

Anyways, not sure what he was up to, but he took off. Maybe he's not so interested in the world of development.

Misc. Media Wednesday

  • Babe and I started doing movie night recently, but we generally stink at it because we usually fall asleep (okay, he does). Nonetheless, we've managed to sneak in about one or two movies a month. Just the other day we watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This is a high school movie and features Hermoine Granger. She does a great job of not being Hermoine, though, something I doubt Daniel Radcliffe will ever be able to pull off. Anyways, in the way of Dead Poets Society and Breakfast Club, this movie is angsty and sad and wonderful. I really, really enjoyed it.
  • We also watched Wreck it Ralph, which was okay. I think animated features have gone the way of  macaroni and cheese for me- which I used to think was a delicious treat and now I can barely eat because of her highness. I love Disney and I love cartoons, but I sort of feel like if she's not watching the movie with me it should probably have real people in it.
Books on Tape

  • Still finishing up Kingsolver's Flight Behavior and it is unbelievably good. I sat in my car for ten extra minutes this morning because I couldn't tear myself away.

Let em wed.

I made this my profile pic on Facebook today because the Supreme Court is figuring out whether or not gay people have the right to marry. I am an ally through and through. I think everyone should be able to get married. If they want.

Whoa! Look at that new table! We got it for a song on craigslist. I mean, kind of a long song, but still! We got the table, five chairs and the bench for less than what a table alone would cost. I love it. Come over!

So, too bad the California Golden Bears suck at every sport. But, we tried to get in the spirit for the March Madness tourney. I *think* this is my favorite pic from the weekend.

A little lunch time coloring.

Buddy wearing all the bracelets.

The look.

Rad! We went on date night on Saturday, courtesy of daycare! And we checked out this bar because you know, we used to live around the corner from West 4th and Jane.

Sunday was zoo day. Here's a gross giraffe tongue.

Selfie of my little family.

Hey Mr. Elephant!

These next three are courtesy of BFF
My little family on the train.

Climbing trees.

Whoa. Giraffe tongue face.

Elevator inspiration

Our elevator at work has one of those screens so you can be entertained for the 35 seconds it takes to get to your floor. God forbid you be alone with your thoughts, I say!

Anyways, this morning it had this idea that I already completely agree with so I was super glad to see it listed there:

Spend your money on experiences rather than things, because stuff breaks and experiences get better with the telling.

Or something like that.

I couldn't agree more.

Babe and I have a long list of things we need, but never get. Like a new knife set and a portable dishwasher and a gosh darn rug to replace the ugly brown one in the living room. We haven't bought a DVD or a CD in years, unless is Pearl Jam or Cinderella.

But we spend money on going out to dinner and lunch and going to Tahoe and on gas for weekend getaways.

And BEER, of course.

We've been talking lately about buying a house. Just chatting, really. Prices are starting to go up again so we better get cracking soon, right?

Problem is, it's too expensive.

Also, we don't have enough money.

Also, the tax issue. WHOA the taxes.

Also? And this is something I realized this morning - I really like my house that I live in. I'm not ready to move out just because I'm supposed to buy a house.

Everything has settled down, you know? We both have good jobs and have our commutes, etc., all worked out. Buddy is doing GREAT in daycare and could potentially stay there for another year and a half as they have a terrific pre-school program.

My house is cheap, it's safe, and comfortable. I like our neighbors. I love my yard.

So, we'll keep talking about it, I think. But I don't know if I'm ready to move yet.

Slow Cooker Korean Beef Tacos

Hey guys! Here's another amazing winner of a slow cooker recipe. I promise that you will love it!

Slow Cooker Korean Beef Tacos

3-4 pounds beef roast (I used a chuck roast)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 head garlic (peeled, but leave cloves intact--approx 10 cloves. I smashed them.)
1/2 onion, diced
1 inch fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 whole jalapeno, diced (be careful! use gloves!)

The Directions.

Use a 6-quart slow cooker. No need to brown the meat, but do trim off the visible fat. Put roast in slow cooker. Mix all ingredients into a bowl then pour over meat.

Cover, and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until meat has fully shredded--- you can help it out by cutting the meat into pieces an hour or so before serving time. Serve in soft corn tortillas with shredded cabbage salad.

Shredded cabbage:

1 bag shredded coleslaw from the grocery store's produce section
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
toss together and serve immediately

Scant Weekend Pics

We did a lot this weekend, but I can't prove it by my photos! Ang watched Buddy while me and Babe went to lunch and took this super cute and hilarious pic of her.

I got to nap with Princess both days and it makes my heart sing.

One of my cousins put this photo on the Facebook so I wanted to share it here. That's my peeps. Makes me want to take a family picture immediately. I would love to see the reverse of this, with all the women smiling and all the men muy serio.

Haiku Friday

Interesting week.
It sure went by super fast.
That's not a complaint.

The weekend is here.
Lots of hanging out to do.
Some exercise, too?

Work is busy, man!
I have a lot of projects.
And it makes me grin.

Veronica Mars

I watched Veronica Mars right after Buddy was born, when I sat on the Mom Chair and nursed all day long. Ha! I had never even heard of the show when it was on. It's basically a high school show with the very cutesy and funny Kristen Bell as the lead. She has a bunch of adorable boyfriends and solves mysteries.

The show ended on a complete cliffhanger after just three seasons. Bummer. Anyways, I heard on the radio that they are doing a "kickstarter" project to raise $2 million dollars to film a movie. I definitely backed the project!

Watch the funny video, but if you never watched Veronica Mars it probably won't make any sense.

It was just my 'magination...

I started listening to a book on tape (I mean CD, whatever) last week and it has improved my commute immensely  If you know me, and I think you do or else why would you be here?, you know I love to read. I seriously love libros. Libros of all kinds.

Good, bad, trash, Pulitzer prize winning. Give me your vampire fiction, your snotty literary recommendations, your hot new book written by a Brooklynite named Jonathan. Give me your Toni Morrison, your Barbara Kingsolver, your Laurell K. Hamilton.

It's true that it's one of the things I was concerned about when I decided to become a mommy - how will I get my reading in? I remember being on an airplane once, and I sat down and opened a book (I think it was Barbara Kingsolver's Bean Trees? It was that long ago.) Anyways, at the end of the flight, this woman who was sitting behind me with her two little ones said, I can't imagine being able to sit down and read a whole book on a flight. I nearly wept for her.

And it's true. I can no longer read on flights. Or do anything, really, except entertain the Buddy. But I have definitely been able to carve out time to read. My TV life has suffered, though, and that's not great because you know I like to be up on my shows, too.

Where's all the going?

Right, the book on tape.

So, my sibling loaned me a book on tape by Barbara Kingsolver, called Flight Risk. I have never heard of it, but having read every single Kingsolver fiction novel, I figured I couldn't go wrong.

It's pretty incredible to be driving and reading at the same time. I just roll along the 10 and listen to her describe the scene. Next thing you know, I'm at work, putting my make up on in the parking garage listening to her tell her story. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book, per se. I'm only on the third CD and I have no idea where this is going. But I definitely recommend the book on tape phenomenon.

Wow, long post.

Tahoe Weekend Pics

We took a trip to Lake Tahoe on Thursday and returned home yesterday. It was very fun and the traveling was super easy. Buddy is such a good girl. Here she is in the airport people watching.

And here she is making faces while dada installs the car seat at 9:45 pm in Sacramento. The drive up was easy though and all things considered the trip was a snap.

Mostly, the weekend was about how cute these two girls are.

Snow angels.

Buddy + snow = cute and awesome.

Making snowballs.

View from the pad.

With Uncle Oi.

Snowball fight.

Knee deep.

Thanks to LL for these dope pics. Thanks to the guys for making this dope hill for this kids to sled down.

Lake Tahoe

Our little family is off to Lake Tahoe for some R&R this afternoon/evening. I'm really looking forward to a mini vacay!

We'll be flying this evening to Sacramento, where we have rented an SUV with a car seat in it that will take us up the mountain. Should be lots of snow so that's fun and a little bit scary. We will get a hotel if conditions seem less than perfect, but I think it will be fine. We used to drive to Tahoe a lot when we were in college. I mean after college when we lived in the Bay. Those roads are pretty well kept.

Anyways, then Babe will go snowboarding on Friday and Saturday and me and Buddy will play in the snow and hang out. I'm excited about the hanging out part. A bunch of our pals are coming up from the Bay and so we'll all play and play! Hooray!

Sick Day

Yesterday was sick day for Buddy. Unfortunately, I was also sick which sucked. Because taking care of a sick Buddy when you are sick, sucks.
Anyways, it wasn't all bad. Obviously. As you can see from the above.

Misc. Items

  • Missed you guys yesterday, due to a sick day! Sorry about that. I was taking care of her highness, but also have a cold myself so that was kind of lame. I am back at work now where I can rest. Ha!
  • We are going to Tahoe on Thursday for the weekend. I am pretty excited to see buddy in the snow. Perhaps I will take my real camera and get real pictures of her playing? Doubtful.
  • I am drinking tea with honey in it. And I sound like a sniffly kid. Yick. I had to put someone on hold so I could blow my nose. Ha!
  •  Does anyone else who has an iphone "lose" their voicemails? Mine disappear and the only way I can access them is by calling in to my phone. So weird.

Wknd Pictures

Buddy on the stoop eating oranges with Grampa.

Buddy with Grama, looking at the cake.

And blowing out the candles.

My sister took Buddy around the neighborhood and showed  her rapunzel's tower. Then, she bought a rapunzel doll and my other sister hid it the next morning. This is a picture montage of Buddy discovering 'punzel fell out of her tower.

And carrying her dolly home.

And opening it with Grampa.

And we went swinging. This picture makes me laugh.

My parents, matching.
