Also? Make me these.

Turnin it around

I have been off my game for a number of weeks now. But, yesterday, I noticed a wee change in my demeanor. A little spring in my step.

It seems like - I got my groove back!

Not much changed to get me here, it's more like a flip switched. Wait. A switch flipped. You know what I mean.

Here's hoping that this change is here for awhile. I think so. I'm not used to being all emo and shit.

Hope you're having a great day!

Weekend Pics

Easily one of the funniest parts of our weekend was getting a house-phone installed. Why? I don't know. It was $3 a month. I basically bought what the time warner cable guy was selling me.

Look who was having the best day ever?
We took the train to the Science Museum to see the space shuttle.

Pals on the train.

That look, man. I love it.

Me and Buddy in front of the Endeavor.

Endeavor = unbelievable. Completely worth the trip. It will blow you mind.

Mind = blown.

Rad aquarium at the Science Museum.

Buddy driving a snow mobile.

Playing outside.

Give me a number any number

18 things to be thankful for and that should make me happy instead of emo because sometimes things are hard.

  1. Buddy's little chicklet toes that I want to eat.
  2. Chachi's hair. Ask buddy what color hair her dada's is: Red! Orange! Red! Orange!
  3. My gorgeous locks that I do not have to dye despite being 35 years old.
  4. My beautiful watch littered with diamonds that my husband gave me for Christmas.
  5. My avon lotion that my sister thoughtfully provided for me that keeps my hands soft and smelling like sugar plum & vanilla.
  6. My nephew running after buddy and her kissing his face instead of hitting him.
  7. Coffee with cream.
  8. Steamy romance novels (libros electronicos on mi kindle? ha! thanks babe!).
  9. Grandparents who spoil buddy and give her presents and love.
  10. My view of Los Angeles.
  11. UGH 18 really? My owl cup that babe gave me for Christmas that helps me save and protect the environment instead of using paper throwaway cups every day.
  12. The cleaning lady who hasn't left us yet, but one day will decide it's just not worth it.
  13. The art buddy makes me at daycare.
  14. The quokka - the happiest animal on earth. Just click the link already.
  15. Staying off facebook all day.
  16. Funny coworkers.
  17. An upcoming trip to Tahoe!
  18. My new tights.

For various reasons, I have been thinking about leadership lately. Having had the privilege of working for an excellent leader and visionary, I can tell you that just being around good leaders makes life a little bit better. Makes you try harder, makes you see the future more clearly, makes working hard feel right.

Anyways, so I went to a talk on leadership last night from a previous mayor of Los Angeles. Interesting man, some good lessons. He said there are four or five traits you must have to be a leader.

  1. Have the courage to make hard decisions.
  2. Care for everyone you meet, from the janitor on up.
  3. Empower others to do good work.
  4. Relentlessly pursuit your goals - be a closer.
The fifth thing - have a sense of humor - is not something you can necessarily teach. But he did think it was an important quality in a leader.

Other highlights from the talk were:

  • If you make a mistake, admit it with confidence. The biggest mistake you can make is to not do something.
  • And, it's much easier to get forgiveness than permission.

I was raised Catholic and we always honored Lent by "giving something up" and not eating meat on Fridays.

We also had what we called "the Sunday rule" which meant that you could eat what you gave up on Sundays. I don't think this is a common practice, but it totally worked for our family.

Over the course of my childhood, I gave up things that were hard, like candy, to things that were stupid, like banana cream pie. I remember one year, my sister gave up watermelon. Which isn't in season.

Anyways, I'm not religious anymore and am beyond a lapsed Catholic. But, I do enjoy rules and giving things up. This forty day period offers a perfect chance to do just that. A few years ago, I gave up candy. Then, some time later, I upped the ante by giving up beer and candy. And for both of those occasions, the Sunday rule was not in effect.

This year, I have decided to give up both beer and candy but with the Sunday rule guaranteed to come into play. And, Babe, Buddy and I are going to Tahoe in March, so I will be drinking beer then, Sunday or not.

A dream is a wish your heart makes!
Buddy and Dada watching Cinderella.

So, Ang and Babe will laugh at me because I got teary about the above quote. But I can't help it. It keeps happening, in fact. As a mommy with a loud little buddy, you really feel like a poop when you want to go out and eat and drink and so many places are so snotty and mean about bringing kids. This sign was up at the Golden Road Brewery and it just makes me feel so pleased. Children weren't tolerated at this spot, they were embraced! Loved! These places are coming up in Los Angeles a little bit and it makes me super happy.

Weekend Pics - still waiting on babe's

You might see a second installment later, peeps. Babe must be working his butt of per uzh, because he hasn't sent me his pics. But maybe he didn't take any this weekend? I don't remember.

Sometimes, this here buddy has enough of mama's picture taking. But guess what? I don't care.

She refused to look at the camera.

Date lunch!!!

Balloon on the Santa Monica Promenade. One of my fave places to stroll with her.

Yeah, so then we saw a camel? Walking down the promenade. Huh?

Apparently they were featured on the Kathy Lee and  Hoda show.

And we also ate ice cream.

Misc. Links, a public service

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

I saw this on the facebook and thought it was somewhat interesting, therefore, I share it with you:

"No authoritarian authority exists that determines whether a given word is valid or bogus. In any language, there's a complex and imperfect vetting procedure; at least in English, most serious writers agree on the correct or preferred form of a word that is one of two or more variants or on whether a word is acceptable at all.

1. Administrate
2. Commentate
3. Dimunition
4. Exploitive
5. Firstly
6. Heighth
7. Irregardless
8. Miniscule
9. Orientate
10. Participator
11. Preventative
12. Societal
13. Supposably
14. 'Til
15. Undoubtably
So, here are my thoughts:

They left off a few:
  • Boughten (I had already boughten in)
  • Tooken (I would've tooken a bullet for you, man)
  • alot (my my egregiousness typo. babe had to sit me down one day and say, why do you make a lot one word? since then, you won't find it.)
But, I want to know. Does anyone really like Supposably is  a word? I have long hated the word irregardless.

There, boring but true.

Misc. Media Tuesday

Netflix Streaming Movie
On our queue for some time has been New York, I Love You, one of these anthology type of movies with about 100 different actors in it. This one was neat because each snippet was a short story directed by a different director, each with their own definite style. Two gems stand out - one was directed by Mira Nair and starred Natalie Portman playing a pretty unconvincing Hassidic woman. But it was a really beautiful little love story. And the second was about a couple celebrating their 63rd wedding anniversary. Darned if that one didn't make me cry real tears. There were several good ones and a couple of crap ones (Natalie Portman - maybe she should stay on this side of the camera, if you know what I mean? The one she directed fell way flat.) Anyways, I recommend. It's short and easy. Just like you know who...

Movie out in Theaters
Babe and I had a date night sponsored by our daycare, god bless them. So we took in dinner and a movie. For all of you parents out there, you know that one is sometimes possible but never both. We went and saw Argo and it was just so good. So suspenseful  so smart and super easy to watch. In case you have been residing under a rock somewhere, its about six American hostages held in Iran and how they escaped under the guise of a crew filming a movie called Argo. Lots of good acting and I have a soft spot in my heart for Alan Arkin, ever since he was the commissioner in So I Married An Ax Murderer, all those years ago.

Before the weekend, I took the briefest of brief business trips to the Bay Area and here is the view from my hotel room.

On Saturday, we drove out to Redlands to check out the Hangar 24 Brewery. It was a beautiful drive.

Hanger 24 sits adjacent to the  Redlands airport.

Here's Buddy in a hamper.

And Buddy in the Wild.

Beautiful Oxnard, California. I love love love driving around my hometown.

I made Crusty's bars for the superbowl. They were beyond delicious.

Me and all the children swinging.

Watching TV.
