Very misc. items

  • I got a new iphone! Damned if I haven't even turned it on yet, though. Ha! I need to purchase a case before I start using it. I also kind of need an hour or two.
  • There is a Chobani crisis. I'm not kidding. The little single serving containers are not available at any store in Culver City. Why?
  • Carmageddon II this weekend. Lots of warnings on the radio about not trying to take your skateboard or bike ride out for a jaunt on the empty 405. Also, don't even think about sneaking on for a bottle of wine with your lover. You will get arrested. I'm sorry, what? Who was thinking of that before you said it?? Now I know what we're doing for date night!

This is her eating yogie this morning.

BFF had Buddy duty on Saturday and here are the chirrun watching Teebee.

I tried to post this yesterday, but didn't notice that it had failed.

Here's the view from the Wells Fargo building on "bunker hill" in LA. That's in quotes because I have no idea what it means. Anyways, we had our event there on the 55th floor. Definitely the highest I've been up in LA.

Look! That's Dodger Stadium!

Recipes: Salad Trio

We had an impromptu BBQ on Saturday which featured a Sausage Fest (bratwurst, hot dogs and chicken pesto sausages) and three salads! Here are the salad recipes, with my adaptions:

Bonita's Broccoli Salad
BFF gave me this recipe in my book of recipes from when I got married. I've never made it before! It was my favorite of the three.

  • 1 head broccoli - just the flower parts
  • 6 to 8 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion, sliced very thin
  • 1 cup mayonnaise, I used reduced fat of course
  • 1/4 cup red wine  vinegar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup of mushrooms
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Shredded carrots, a couple of handfuls

Mix together the salad dressing: the mayo, sugar and vinegar.
Mix together the veggies, add the dressing, salt and pepper and chill. I added the carrots and thought there were a nice touch. You could probably get away with less sugar, too. YUM! I omitted the bacon and mushrooms, because we had a vegetarian in attendance and, frankly, I prefer my bacon crispy and whole, not mixed into salads getting all wilty.

Black Bean Salad
This recipe is from Simply Recipes, my favorite place to get recipes. Click here for original. I omitted the jalapenos because there were lots of kids at the BBQ, and I omitted the fresh basil because I was lazy. I added more like two limes worth of lime juice.

  • 1 (15 ounce) can of black beans, thoroughly rinsed, and drained
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen corn, defrosted (I used canned. Whatever.)
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions or shallots
  • 2 fresh jalapeño peppers, seeded and minced, or 1 whole pickled jalapeño pepper, minced (not seeded)
  • 3 fresh plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped (I used random tomatoes from my garden.)
  • 1 avocado, peeled, seeded, and cut into chunks. (I used one and a half.)
  • 1/2 cup fresh chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped basil
  • 2 Tbsp lime juice (about the amount of juice from one lime) I used two limes worth.
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sugar (to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

1 In a large bowl, combine the beans, corn, onions, jalapeno chile peppers, tomatoes, avocado, cilantro, basil, lime juice and olive oil.
2 Add sugar and salt and pepper to taste. (The sugar will help balance the acidity from the tomatoes and lime juice.) Chill before serving.

Cucumber Salad with Mint and Feta
Also from Simply Recipes. Click here for original. I ate this one the second day for lunch and it was even more delicious. YUM!

  • 1 lb thin skinned, mild (non bitter) cucumbers, such as Persian, Armenian, or Japanese cucumbers, thinly sliced. You might also try it with English cucumbers. I used English Cucumbers.
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced and cut into 1-inch long segments
  • 2 or 3 red radishes, thinly sliced
  • 10 mint leaves, thinly sliced
  • White vinegar
  • Olive oil
  • 1/4 pound feta cheese
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper

In a medium sized bowl, gently toss together the sliced cucumbers, red onion, radishes, mint leaves with a little bit of white vinegar and olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Right before serving, sprinkle on crumbled bits of feta cheese. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Numbers - mostly work related

  1. As of today, I have been at my new job for one week.
  2. I work with about 7 people and I like them all so far. There is one girl who I think wanted my job but didn't get it, so she kinda hates me I think. But her last day is Friday, so whatever. I mean she's nice enough but you know? I get it.
  3. I work on the fifteenth floor of a building.
  4. It takes me about thirty minutes to get here on the 10 Freeway. I will probably only take the train when I don't have meetings and I'll probably have a lot of meetings. I should have taken the train this morning but I chickened out.
  5. I have about six orientation and training things to do this month. I have done two so far. I just finished a safety preparedness training for my building. What to do in the event of an earthquake, etc.
  6. Even though it is almost the end of 2012, I would like to get a calendar for my desk. I am hopeless without one.
  7. I have spent a lot of time this month outlining goals for myself. I call it my personal journey. They are going okay so far, it's not easy to make big life changes you know? These things take time. But I am taking it one day at a time!

Misc. Incredibly Boring Updates

  1. i noted where i parked today in my work parking garage via text message and photograph to myself, after having to drive around parking garage 4 on campus for 8 minutes with a kid named Andrew, who didn't have class until 2pm. He had been looking for parking for 20 minutes so was feeling rather desperate.
  2. i attended this morning  one of two benefit orientations, this one focused on becoming a card carrying member of the trojan family.
  3. i am in love with my dress. just in love with it. this is the dress
  4. it is sort of cool out and seems like its going to rain.
  5. my sibling and the kids are coming up this weekend, so i'm glad. i really want to see my niece and nephews. and my sister of course!
  6. i sang the golden bears fight song today while walking through campus.

Wknd Pic FAIL

Dear Gentle Blog Reader:

I don't have any pictures from this weekend. How could that happen? I just don't know. We did fun stuff, we played outside, we took walks. We checked out new things. There was sprinkler time and activities, and lots of football. There were little trips in the car and meals at restaurants. There was playing with dollies and in the kitchen. But I didn't take any pictures.

I'm sorry. I hope you forgive me. I will try to make it up with a mid-week photo shoot.

Until tomorrow.

  1. Why not do a numbers? It feels like it's been awhile. It's raining today, for maybe the tenth time since I moved here.
  2. The other night, Sunday I think? I was awoken by yet another earthquake. That was the second, both were about 3.5 or 3.6. This was centered in Beverly Hills. It felt like it rolled through the pad, where the last one was more like a boom.
  3. This past three day weekend was really divine. It topped off my week-long vacay with Princess Buddy. I think I may have a Buddy Week 2012 pics post to follow.
  4. We hung out here, celebrated a birthday party for a three year old and a one year old, had our peeps over, ate good food, took several long walks. It was super nice.
  5. Today is my one day officially between jobs. Tomorrow is my first day of work at USC. I couldn't be more excited. I finally closed out that consulting gig I've been working on, so I am officially free to do whatever I want today. I am probably gonna run errands. Ha!
