I sure do feel like I have a lot of balls in the air right now.

I am finishing my job here at UCLA and I have a ton of work to do.

I have a huge meeting coming up that I am facilitating for USC, for that consulting work that I have been doing.

I have a two year old.

I am trying to get this new job at USC and have to do massive prep work for my meeting with the Dean on August 9th. Like I've had two calls in the past four days to get more ideas for it and I have a dinner tonight which is mostly fun but also will focus on this job. I am trying to schedule another call with this professor at the request of another professor.

I have a meeting on Friday that I have been asked to go to by some potential clients, if I continue to do consulting work (if I don't get the USC gig).

I also have a life, with a wonderful husband and a cute little fun toddler who I always want to play with. And I have the Olympics to watch.

I am also supposed to be training for the Boob Walk (I've raised almost all of the money I need! Go ahead, click the link!)

I'm also getting nervous about the upcoming presidential elections, but don't think I am going to have the capacity to get involved.

Add to that a bunch of stuff I won't write about here and there you go. Lots of balls in the air.

Weekend Pics!

It was a fun weekend full of a lot of different things. I'm working on re-organizing different parts of the house. Now that we've been here a year, things are starting to pile up in places you can't really see, and I hate that. So, on Saturday I cleaned out the shoe closet, which also has all the hats and scarves that we surely won't be needing anymore. Here's buddy in her apple had that Max made her a year and a half ago.

We went to our pal's dad's memorial in Pasadena. It was lovely and sad. Here are the LBChildren looking all super cute though.

Saturday night was date night!! Wow. Thanks, Auntie! We went out to the Lazy Ox Canteen downtown. There, we ate the best meal (really? I think so.) since we moved out here. It was delicious. They had this dope mural on the wall outside the bano.

Close up of the Jesus Ox.

Sunday was our usual bit of fun and chores. In the AM, we all went to our friend's house who were housesitting with a pool and played in the pool. Then Auntie had to leave and it wad time for Family Nap. After Family Nap, we rolled to the grocery store. Here's buddy in the cart. She put this on herself, I didn't do it.

She's so loud.

I love her.

Auntie and Buddy.

Babe called me into the bedroom, because Buddy had put herself in a bag.

Haiku Friday

Listen here, people.
Your summer is almost done.
Only August left.

Get it together.
Get to the beach or the pool.
Fire up the grill.

The dog days are here.
Hopefully August is HOT.
And we can go swim.

USC, UCLA and UC Berkeley

  • As much as it pains me to think I might end up working at USC, I nevertheless really want this job I've been interviewing for (for which I've been interviewing). I spoke with my-guy-on-the-inside yesterday and he said it's between me and one other person. I am more qualified, but the other guy has a "relationship" with the school/with the peeps/with more people than me. So, I'm obviously not giving up but I'm definitely going into this one fighting tooth and nail.
  • As much as I adore working at UCLA with its rolling hills, ocean breezes and public school edge, I am delighted to report that I only have three and a half more weeks in this current gig. I have a lot of work to do lately, which helps immensely. But this job was just "not a fit" and that is all I will say. Unless I talk with you over the phone, then you will hear an earful. Ha!
UC Berkeley
  • Babe and I finally bit the bullet and purchased lifetime memberships to the Cal Alumni Association. It feels great to officially be a part of the community and to pay some dues to Cal. I also got a cool key ring. Ha!

Last night I woke up to a BOOM! And my windows were rattling. A wee earthquake, 3.8, but my first since moving back to this coast. It was centered basically where I live so that's why I felt it and it was so loud.

Of course I lay awake watching for movement in the ceiling fan and waiting for the big one to hit. Thinking about our lack of earthquake kit and wondering how Buddy would feel crouching under the dining room table with me.

  1. I would have been here sooner, but I had been loaned out to another office to do some data entry. I spent 4 hours today and 3 hours yesterday manually punching in two numbers two times for each of 600, second- and third- year students. That, my friends, is why they pay me the big bucks.
  2. This past weekend was chock full. On Friday night, as you know I went out to dinner with two of my girlfriends, one of whom is moving back to NYC today!
  3. On Saturday morning, Ruby came by for a couple of hours. We hung out in the backyard eating breakfast: pan dulce fresh from the bakery, fruit and mimosas. Buddy played in the sprinkler.
  4. In the afternoon, we headed down to LBC for a wee BBQ. The LBC crew grilled up some delicious melt in your mouth carne asada and there were two, count them, two pies from Marie Calendar's! Try them both you say? Don't mind if I do.
  5. Sunday morning, we had some R&R time at the local beach. We played in the water, built a sandcastle and enjoyed the low 70 temps.
  6. Sunday afternoon, Babe took a trip to see the in-laws and Buddy and I got ready for the week. We did five loads of laundry, dishes, made lunches, made dinner, made coffee for the next day, and went to Ralph's and Target.

Weekend Pics

Here's her buddiness, sitting on the counter eating yogurt. She really gets her whole body into it, you know?

I went out to dinner on Friday night downtown in Little Tokyo. But, before dinner I met a pal for a drink in the arts district. It's lovely over there, lots of random public art.

It sorta reminded me of Brooklyn, lots of bikes, artisinal food, craft beer.

I guess what I'm trying to say is Buddy has been eating a lot more lately. A LOT more.

This is how a father of two rolls into the beach.

Lulu turned 1 at the beach!!

Hamming it up for the camera.

The NOOOO face. Hahahahaha.

Haiku Friday

Happy Beeday, O!
Our little Omanistan.
You are the cutest.

Your eyes are so big.
The way you smile slays me.
And of course, those feet.

I want to hug you.
Too bad Buddy won't let me.
I love you Oman.

  • Am going to try something new today on this blog for a change.
  • Blogging has always been one of my favorite past times. I used to blog every single weekday without fail, but now it's more like four days a week.
  • California weather is absolutely incredible. Really, today is such an amazing day. I wish we didn't have to work and could all play outside today.
  • Don't you?
  • Even if we could just take a half day.
  • Fantastic Fridays, that's what they used to call them at my first job out of college. You got to leave half day in the summer.
  • Geez, that feels like a long time ago.
  • Haven't worked or lived in San Francisco since 2002.
  • I liked it in the Bay, and when we first got to NYC we always figured we'd move back there. Maybe we will.
  • Just joking, guys! I'm all SoCal all the time from now on. I like being close to my family.
  • Know what I mean? I mean the bay area is full of my family, too. I'm lucky that most of those kids (you kids if you're reading this) have your families down in SoCal.
  • Looks like I lied, by the way, on Tuesday. That wasn't our one year anniversary in that house. It was actually on Wednesday, July 18.
  • My bad, folks.
  • Not so trustworthy, I guess. You guys know I make shit up all the time.
  • Ori's beeday is tomorrow!! I can't wait to incorporate "Omanistan" into my haiku.
  • Put a little picture of him up, too.
  • Quite the cutie baby, O-man. I love him. He has the smallest little feeties.
  • Really, I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have so many wonderful and crazy cute nieces and nephews. Being an auntie is the cat's pajamas.
  • So, I should update you on the job search. I did pretty well in my last interview (thank god they gave me some feedback, I really had no idea), and now the final hoop has been set up for me to jump through. A meeting with the dean in three weeks.
  • Three weeks to just work and enjoy the summer. It's going by lightning quick.
  • Usually, I'm not one to say stuff like that. I try to live in the present and I think time passes as at normal speed. But, now I'm telling you the summer if flying by.
  • Very shortly it will be fall.
  • We've got about six weeks left. Make the most of it, kids!
  • Xylophone.
  • Yeah, I thought that was funny. I read a lot of ABC books and boy you would think the xylophone is as prominent in life as, say, an apple or a bear. Speaking of a bear, I think a trip to the
  • zoo this summer would be awesome.

  1. Just completed my fourth interview for this job at USC. It went okay. Not as great as the first three, but not at all bad. Just the waiting game now, and hopefully they still want me to come in for the fifth interview.
  2. Today is my one year anniversary of living in this house! We moved in on July 17, 2011. We have renewed our lease and hopefully will live in this house for another two years.
  3. My current position at UCLA Law ends one month from today. It has been an experience. I like the people I work with (mostly) and I love working at UCLA. And the benefits of the job are terrific. But, I won't be sorry to not work there anymore.
  4. If I don't get the USC gig, I still have consulting work to do for them. At least a couple of months worth. And I have two more consulting opportunities that I can capitalize on. Hopefully I get the job, though!
  5. I have raised $1,545 towards my goal of $1,800 for the 39 mile walk I am doing with my sisters in September. As a team, we are at $4,530 or 84% of our goal. Please consider donating by clicking here. If you have already, thank you a million times over! If you haven't, why not donate to the team?! Every $5 gift helps!

San Diego Weekend Pictures

Here's my too cool nephew BenBen in the pool!

We went down for the O-Man's 1 year birthday. He's turning 1 on Friday!!

My supermodel niece The Nav.

Papa and Buddy splashing around in the pool. Thanks to Ang for these pics!

YAY ORI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes, Buddy (Mowgli)  ignores Auntie when Auntie first comes over.

And then gives her the poop eye when she does look at her.

Navi and Buddy holding hands, shredding my heart into hundreds of pieces.

This was the sunset on Thursday night! I didn't do anything to the colors!! NEAT, right?

Here's my requisite beer picture. No weekend in San Diego would be complete without one.

Haiku Friday

They call this "muggy."
Current temp? Sixty-seven.
Some humidity.

Overhead ayer,
"Wow! The weather is insane."
17 rain drops.

I love these fellas.
These SoCal Babes and Bettys.
So easy to shock.

Bee story sandwich

Bee story one

  • Several weeks ago, Ang and I were walking with Buddy in the stroller. All of a sudden, a bee approached us! It flew near Buddy's face and then landed on her shirt collar, an inch away from her little neck. So, what did I do? I picked up the bee and threw it. Got that?
The West Side of LA

  • So, BFF has always been very good at becoming friends with other bloggers. In fact, she met her husband through her blog. I, on the other hand, have not really done much interacting with fellow bloggers. Except for one, Mona! About a hundred years ago (really more like 8), I had googled a restaurant and found a review of it on Mona's blog, so I linked to it and left her a comment. We went back and forth over the years, and then she moved to California. As you know, I also moved to California. Anyways, long story short, we were getting coffee at Tanners this morning, Me, Babe and Buddy, and Babe (by the way, did you know that Babe has CRAZY face recognition skillz? Like he could be that software the FBI uses.) said, "Is that Mona?" and I said, "how the heck should I know?!" and he said I think it is. So, I went up to her and said: "Are you Mona?" and she said "Coodence?!" And we hugged and cheered. And exchanged numbers. She lives around the corner and I predict some hanging out in our future.
Bee story two

  • Yesterday, we were playing outside and Buddy was busy behind me. She opened up her hand to me and said "BUG!!!" all excited and cutesy. She was holding a big ol dead bee. I said, oh my! Let mommy have that please and I picked it up and threw it. Got that?

Wknd Pictures & Numbers

This picture isn't even from the weekend. On Thursday, I took a mental health day to take care of Buddy who had a cold. One of the best things in my life ever is that on weekends or random days, I get to take a nap with Buddy. She usually sleeps for about two hours in her crib, alone, but sometimes, she'll wake up after only an hour. In which case, I bring her to my bed and she sleeps next to me for another hour or so. This is her when she woke up, playing with stickers on her footie.

This weekend, Samoi came to town. We stayed up LATE on Friday night, drinking some beers and playing some darts. I probably took this pic somewhere around 1:30 or 2:00 in the morning. Did Buddy wake up at 6am? You betcha! Was I up with her, playing and watching Yo Gabba Gabba? You got that right!

This is Buddy, in a box. To me, she looks like an emo youngster (12? 13) from  Brooklyn.

Here's princess Buddy right before she goes into the Pacific Ocean for the first time. You heard me. We've been here one year. What is a matter with us? I don't know.

Buddy's little toesies in the water. We spent about two hours at the beach on Sunday morning and had a wonderful time.

Buddy and Papa going in for round 2 in the ocean!

For Buddy's second birthday, we bought her a little kitchen. It took her papa like four hours to put together. But so far, totally worth it!!

4th of July!

I know, I know! It's supposed to be weekend pictures. And they will come. But, first I thought I should share with you pics from the 4th of July!
Is this a bunny?
This is a duck.
Quack quack.

This is a picture of a Bloody Mary that BFF purchased for me . I drank it.

Buddy entering Casey's Castle.

The good doctor having his way with some tri-tip and ribs.

Casey tossin chips.

Gaga and Buddy.

I have 35 pictures of this on my phone. Mostly there are no fireworks, just my house in the dark.

Haiku Friday

Summer yawns ahead,
now that June is over with.
Not much going on.

Exactly the way
I want it to be. Member
when we were children?

Playing all day long.
Running inside to eat din.
Then, back out again.

Thursday, July 05, 2012

  • How was your fourth of July? Ours was very chill and very fun. We went over to Fridays to hang out with BFF and her familials. Buddy was a little under the weather but she took it pretty easy over at BFF's and we had a really nice day. We got home in no time (like an hour?) and we watched a million different fireworks go off all over our neighborhood.
  • I'm closing out this job here at UCLA. I have two reports due in the next month in addition to my day to day work. But, the lady I was covering for came back from maternity leave and I'm definitely a little redundant. It's not a bad feeling, truth be told. I can focus on getting my next gig.
  • I have a third interview for this job at USC next week. I really hope it works out. I have the highest confidence in myself, but you just can't account for the competition. If the guy I'm up against has more experience it doesn't really matter how smart, funny and competent I am. I will keep you posted.
  • It's overcast and gloomy here. It certainly doesn't feel like July.
  • Buddy doesn't really wear clothes at home anymore, just a diaper. So we call her Mowgli, you know from the Jungle Book. So, Mowgli is sitting next to me while I'm typing.

Things I owe you

I owe you:

  • Pictures from my NYC trip.
  • A "Numbers NYC."
  • Some details about Buddy's 2nd birthday party.
  • An update on my job search.
  • A discussion about the upcoming Avon Breast Cancer walk and my training regiment and fundraising plan.
  • A look forward at the rest of the summer.
  • Some thoughts on my first year in California.
That's what you can expect to see in the coming days. As for today? You get empty promises.

Wknd pics

Big ups to the LBC clan for the sandbox. Not sure how I feel about purple sand all over the house, but I can tell you one thing. The kid loves it. So, it's totally worth it.

My neat backyard with my dad sitting in it. Turns out, this backyard can hold about 25 adults and 11 kids plus a taco guy and still have room to hang out.

Me and the O-man.

The kids.

Nav and Ang

Cake!! Happy 2 years buddy!!

These kids really got along together. It's because they are super independent and have no need for supervision whatsoever.

Possibly my favorite picture of the last several years. These kids are crazy. And get them all together and it is a laugh riot. If you are asking yourself, is Buddy in a Princess costume? The answer is yes. She got a Rapunzel doll that has this matching dress. There you go.

Thanks to Ang for a lot of these pics!
