  1. Princess turned seven months old on Friday. What a darling little lamb she is!
  2. She's still working on that second tooth. It's taking its sweet time.
  3. Took it easy on Friday night with the buddy. Babe worked, as usual. BAH! I was in bed my ten.
  4. Saturday, bottled beer. Well, I did very little. We had a beer bottling party with Irish themed foods. I made shepherds pie! Yum! We bottled about 42 bottles of beer.
  5. Sunday we had two pals over - good ole friends who are now expecting a baby! Hoorah! We had a nice brunch - I made a strata, recipe to follow, and a salad. They brought over this ridiculous apple bread.
  6. Checked out Roman's on DeKalb for one glass on Sunday evening. Nice way to end the weekend, with a toast.

Bread Pudding

You guys know I'm not big into baking, well because I'm not big into measuring really. Or needing specific ingredients, etc.

But, we had all this leftover bread from last week's football playoff extravaganza (because I featured bratwurst on buns and my friend Matt "Guitar" Murphy brought over Chicago classic, italian beef served on rolls.) So we had a lot of big rolls leftover.

Bread pudding is my kind of baking. I used Paula Deen's recipe and adapted it in this way:

  • Sort of stale kaiser rolls cut about (I used two of those, plus another italian roll I had).
  • Mixed together: five eggs, 1 and a half cup of sugar (reducing the sugar from Ms. Deen's recipe seemed like a good idea), two cups skim milk, a bit of vanilla extract.
  • Pour that mixture over the bread, let it sit for ten minutes.
  • Poured all that into a baking dish.
  • Tossed a pint of blueberries on the whole thing.
  • Mixed up a little brown sugar with "a little bit a butta" (say it like Paula Deen, now).
  • Baked the whole thing for 35 minutes. Yum, yum, yum!

It would be funny
if we added oodie to
all the words we said.

Little buddoodie,
She'd be even cuter, then!
Is that possible?

I already call
Babe boodie. It's my name too.
Coodoodie? Why not?

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good
  • That snow sure is beautiful out there! Wow, is it ever coming down. We have two storms coming through the city today, one in the morning and one tonight. Hooray winter 2011! Trains were running just fine and I work from home tomorrow so thank the maker I don't have to carry the buddy in half a foot of snow.
  • Enjoyed the State of the Union last night, was pleased no one shouted at the president.
The Bad
  • I still haven't sent Ang a birthday present. Sorry, dude! It's coming, it's a coming.
The Ugly
  • Babe's work gets the prize for the ugly this week (and last). Multiple deadlines and since they laid everyone else off last year he is the only person working on this stuff. He's working late, working when he gets home and night, and working on the weekend. Good thing he doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night with a princess buddy who hates sleeping through the night. Oh wait. That's not true.

  1. It's six degrees out. Yes, that trumps the age of my baby.
  2. Buddy is going to be seven months real soon. Friday, in fact!
  3. So far, over the course of her short but interesting life she has gone from waking ever two hours, to waking once a night, to waking twice a night, to waking every hour and a half to waking sometimes often. Ha! I know that doesn't make any sense, but neither does her sleeping schedule. She's getting her second tooth and boy does that shit piss her off.
  4. Did I mention it being six degrees outside?
  5. Frequent blog commenter Jessicurl is going to have a baby in less than two months, people. How exciting is that?! I look forward to meeting the little darling.
  6. Another blog commenter, Solanasaurus, got hitched a week ago. Mazel I say! They make a lovely couple.
  7. Old school blogging pals Drew and Michele are expecting their first baby! How exciting, indeed! Newsy, newsy, newsy.
  8. This weekend, we had a lovely brunch at our friend's new pad on the fifth floor of one of Brooklyn's many new buildings.
  9. Yesterday we had several people over to watch the Packer Game which was delightful and nerve-wracking. Feels like the 90s again with the Pack going to the superbowl!

Baby Parents Dinner

Once a month, we get together with the ladies I met in the prenatal yoga. All of our babies are now anywhere from six to seven and a half months. It's like a different version of wine club, really. Each set of parents hosts at their house, everyone brings either an app, a dessert, or a salad. The host provides the main. Much wine is drunk, all the babies play together. I love it.

Buddy Day!

Is it buddy day already?? Hello holiday Monday!

  • I need to do several things for work: check in on thanks for the upcoming conference with supporters, read CD page, read two pager.
  • Take good care of princess. She's so funny. She's wearing her winter white pants from Grama today. Bouncing like a crazy person in her jumper.
  • Dishes, etc.
  • Go see the twinsies this morning.
  • Make something good for dinner.
  • Put together the rocking chair???
  • Maybe take a nap?

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good
  • My attitude about work has improved. There's plenty of good stuff to do here and that makes me glad.
  • I made broccoli soup yesterday and homemade burreets to have for lunches.
  • Buddy is feeling much, much better.
The Bad
  • Princess still hates sleeping through the night. She slept okay last night but it still means at least two wake ups.
  • NYC, this morning. Freezing rain? Onto already snowy/icy streets? The result is black puddles of mush, icy wet rain hitting you in the face and the bod, and slushy, slushy, slushy sidewalks.

Numbers - MLK J Edition

  1. Princess is well into her sixth month now, month seven is just around the corner.
  2. Watched a lot of football this weekend - about three of the four games. Man! Some good stuff happening out there. Lots of upsets. And HOORAY for the packers!
  3. Went to dinner at my friend's house, where little buddy was one of five babies all about the same age. Yeah, they're all so cute.
  4. I made a good salad for that dinner party with only five ingredients: mesclun greens, blue cheese, dried cherries, toasted walnuts and homemade vinaigrette which was made of white wine vinegar, dijon mustard, olive oil, salt and pepper.
  5. Brewed five gallons of beer yesterday with pals. Well, truthfully I did almost nothing, just watched, but I was there!
  6. I have a three day weekend today and I wish Babe did too. I have a nice list of a lot of projects I'd like to do and I get to take care of buddy all day. Nice.

Haiku Friday

My poetry lacks
because I often rush it.
Too much work to do.

Like a laser beam,
When I am in the workplace.
Try not to waste time.

I break for pumping.
That's when I write my email.
"Like" things on facebook.

Great Grampa

My cousin posted this picture on the Facebook. The man on the right is my Great Grampa Ralph Fredenberg. How bout that?

I've been so upset about these Arizona shootings. Of course these mass shootings, which have seemingly become an annual occurrence in our lovely civilized nation, are always upsetting and unhappy events. This one made me madder than usual because of the congresswoman who was only 40 years old and seemed like such a nice person and such an exemplary public servant. This shooting also shines a light on a lot of uncomfortable issues like Arizona's gun laws (people are allowed to carry concealed weapons, even to bars, people), that great big wall that's supposed to keep "the illegals" out, and of course the vitriol that is spewed by the Tea Party. (Like Sarah Palin's map.)

So, I was really impressed with the President's address last night. I thought he rose to the occasion and tried to bring us together as a nation, when really we could not be more split apart.

My favorite quote was this one:

“If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let’s make sure it’s worthy of those we have lost,” Mr. Obama said. “Let’s make sure it’s not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle."

Buddy Day!

  • Laundry
  • Doctor's office for Princess Buddy who still has a heck of a cough.
  • Send list to SJG for upcoming conference.
  • Make something good for dinner. (Except maybe not since Babe has an after work thing?)
  • Do some work on the grant report that is due real, real soon.
  • Dishes.
  • FSA form - do you guys have a flexible spending account? It's my first time!
  • Feed buddy carrots.
  • See solanasaurus? May not work.

It's all snowy outside so Babe's work said they had to be in at 1030, so he carried the buddy to daycare this am. I was afraid of falling.

In the same way that I did the first of the month, I dig January. It's all about a fresh start, a clean plate, a blank calendar.

So far, this January does not disappoint. I've been following some resolutions, doing some magazine reading, watching some football.

To 2011, I say Bring It.

Monday, January 10, 2011

  1. First of all, I am really very upset about this congresswoman being shot and would like to talk with you all more about it, but numbers is not the place.
  2. I've totally lost track of weeks, as you've probably suspected, but Princess is well into her sixth month and absolutely thriving.
  3. She has her first cough, though. She's had a sniffly type of cold before, but she has that little kid cough right now. Oh just thinking about it makes my heart bleed.
  4. This weekend, we had about five people over to watch the Packers trounce the Eagles. That was a pleasure. It got a little dicey in the fourth quarter, but we won.
  5. We also attended a baby's first birthday party. That was very sweet.
  6. My friends brought over their one year old, too. What a weekend full of babies. And wine.

Haiku Friday

Totally snowing!
Not a blizzard, though. Just some
flaky, pretty snow.

Buddy's first snow day!
The flakes hit her in the face
and she laughed and laughed.

Dressed very warmly,
a thicker, warmer bear suit,
one with covered paws.

  • Laundry.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Make a few phone calls.
  • Store: bread, chips, salad.

You know as well as I do that air travel is a form of punishment levied on Americans as a tax for living in the first world with nary a real care in the world, right?

This Christmas, Babe and I tempted fate by taking our infant from this coast, to Denver, to the west coast and back again. Let me tell you how it went.

The good
  • We rolled out of NYC before the blizzard was even on the radar. It was dry and 40 degrees in NYC on 12/24. We got to Denver and there wasn't even snow on the ground. We missed all the rain in San Diego. We left San Diego on a dry day and arrived in NYC on a day with no snow.
  • Two times I had been assigned a window and a middle seat despite having chosen an aisle and a middle. Two times the person sitting in the aisle seat cheerfully traded with me so I could get up and down as needed with the buddy.
  • Princess almost never cried at all during any of those flights. She ate, she slept, she partied.
The Bad
  • We took a car service to LaGuardia on December 24th at noon. Our flight was leaving a couple hours later. There was no one at the airport and we journeyed around with ease. I'll tell you what, though. When I tried to check in at home, the gosh darn computer kept saying I didn't have any seats, when I definitely had an email saying my seats were 21D and E, or whatever. So, at LGA, I talked with a United representative at the ticket kiosk who said I couldn't have my seats. I asked him again in a really nice way and showed him the email on my smart phone and he said he couldn't read the email because it was too small. So I asked him to ask someone else to read the email. He had someone else read it but didn't believe the person when they told him that yes, it said I had seats. We talked about it for a while. Long story short, he said no I couldn't have my seats. I asked to talk to his supervisor. He talked with his supervisor and reported to me that I couldn't have my seats. I asked him to send his supervisor over, handing him a candy cane as I did so. Bruce the supervisor came over, said I couldn't have my seats. I showed Bruce my smart phone. He gave me my seats.
The Ugly
  • We got to Denver International Airport on December 28th at 7am for an 8:35 am flight. We were unable to check in online because of the Infant in Lap. We got into a line of about 500 people and then through a security line of about 5000 people. We got to the security line at 7:55. We got to our gate at 8:25. The plane left at 8:35. It was ugly, but we did it.

Numbers 2011 Edition 1

  1. Buddy is six months and one week old today!
  2. We took her to the doctor. She got three shots + a flu vaccine. She weighs 16 pounds, 10 ounces and she is 26 and a half inches long. 75 percentile in weight, 90th in height. She's so cute.
  3. We watched the Packer game at Pacific Standard yesterday. Princess napped for more than two hours so we really had a chance to watch the game.
  4. It's nice to be home after 9 days away. I will have photos and updates for you to view.
  5. Not making resolutions this year, because with the buddy I feel like as long as I can keep taking good care of her and okay care of myself that is really all I can ask of myself. I usually make two or three but I think this year is a no go.
