The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good

  • In San Diego this week! It is absolutely beautiful here. Get to spend time with the family and the buddy. Buddy gets to spend time with the family. Win, win, win.
  • Found some good after Christmas deals, but haven't spent too much money so that is also good.
The Bad
  • Dude, I haven't gotten as much work done as I thought I would. This is entirely my fault. I am terrible at working at Starbucks. SIGH. Oh well. I'm having a good week, like I said, so I can't really complain.
The Ugly
  • The California Golden Bear football team just isn't very good. There are no two ways about it. I mean bowl game, yes. But we just stink at football. Oh well, there's always next year.

  1. I am still working on my 111 list, guys. Don't give up on me. I know you're dying to read it.
  2. Had our first Christmas waking up at home and that was really really nice and really fun. Buddy slept in til 8:30, and we all opened our presents. It was about 75 degrees outside so we played outside for awhile, then took the quick 1 and a half hour drive to Hemet to see the in-laws.
  3. Buddy got a lot of nice presents this year, including a pony to ride on and a drum set with all sorts of instruments inside. Yah! She's having fun. She's going to be 18 months old tomorrow!
  4. Yesterday, I drove down to San Diego because Buddy's day care is closed this week and I have to get some work done. So, I probably did about three hours today which is better than if I had been home alone with Buddy. Then I would have gotten about zero hours done.
  5. Tomorrow is my Dad's birthday! I'm taking him to the bowl game so we can watch the California Golden Bears in action. It's my first bowl game, don't know if it's his.

  42. Buddy and I colored in a coloring book together for the first time.
  43. Celebrated my first mother's day!
  44. Watched the final season of Entourage. It got a little real, too. I didn't love that.
  45. I missed my first season of True Blood. Just got too far behind, and couldn't catch up.
  46. I still haven't found the saving grace of Los Angeles television to replace my beloved NY1.
  47. We hosted several pumpkins for the autumn season, including one brought by my friend Patrick Paumberg who just moved to Germany.

  49. Went to Vegas for the first time.
  50. Went on my first bachelor/bachelor party trip and made dope pins of the couple for everyone to wear.
  51. I wrote a blog entry that was supposed to be 111 things about 2011, but it turned out to be only 51.

  1. Finished the Christmas cards - 88 sent out this year!
  2. Purchased about five christmas gifts Sunday.
  3. Went to my pal's coookie party downtown LA on Spring and 3rd Street. It's a beautiful old building, turned into a beautiful new loft.
  4. Traded date night with our pals, so Friday night me and Babe went out to dinner while Buddy terrorized their two children, and Saturday night I went over and watched their TV while their two babies slept. I hope to do this every month, to be sure.
  5. I made the mistake of making toffee bars yesterday, a recipe I will share with you because it is so easy it's painful. Why a mistake? Because I work from home. I've already had two "for breakfast."
  6. My favorite pandora station of 2011 is Spoon Radio. It's great music to get your work done.

Great things about 2011!!

2011 has been one of the more challenging years on record for me and my nearest and dearest.

I've decided to start my closing-of-the-year entries by listing some of the great things that have happened in 2011.

  • I got a new niece and a new nephew this year.
  • I moved to California this year and now live within 100 miles of both of my sets of parents and my sisters.
  • I found an awesome house to rent that costs the same as my old spot in Brooklyn but has a backyard, three bedrooms and my own washer and dryer.
  • I got not one but two jobs to keep me super busy and to keep the paychecks coming this way.
  • Babe got a great job, super close to where we live and he is kicking its teeth in so far.
  • I found an awesome daycare for my buddy, steps away from my house, where she has so much fun all day, gets to play with lots of other kids, eats her veggies, and takes naps every day. It costs half of what my childcare cost in NYC, too, and thats for five days instead of four. She also makes me amazing art projects that I will cherish forever.
  • Speaking of my buddy, she is thriving. She has cousins here and lots of little friends who live close by.
Take that, 2011!

Haiku Friday

It's really cold here.
Yeah, I said it. What of it?
Fifty-three's not cold?

You know what you have,
my shivering New Yorkers?

If you stand outside,
then inside my house, it is
it is colder inside. Why?

Two new recipes

I tried two new recipes this week, how bout that, huh? How does she do it, you ask yourself? I don't know. Here's one, hopefully I'll get you the second one, too!

I made a variation of this recipe "Layered Mexican Bake."

My version:

1 pound extra-lean ground beef
large onion, chopped
colorful bell peppers peppers, chopped
2 1/2 cups chunky red salsa + Some taco sauce
1 can of black beans
6 corn tortillas
cup Light Sour Cream
1 1/2 cups  Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
HEAT oven to 375 degrees F.
BROWN meat with onions and peppers in large skillet on medium-high heat. Stir in taco sauce; cook 1 minute. Add salsa and black beans; mix well. Simmer 5 minutes.
SPREAD 2 cups meat sauce onto bottom of 13x9-inch baking dish; top with layers of 2 tortillas, 1 cup meat sauce, sour cream and 1/2 cup cheese. Cover with 2 tortillas, 2 cups of remaining meat sauce and half of remaining cheese; top with remaining tortillas and meat sauce. Cover with foil.
BAKE 30 minutes or until casserole is heated through. Top with remaining cheese; bake, uncovered, 5 min. or until melted.

  1. This past weekend was pretty marvy, dude. Went down to San Diego on Saturday to watch my 8 year old niece perform in the Nutcracker. I really love the Nutcracker, we used to go every year when I was a kid because my sister was in it. It was awfully nice to be there and it was very festive.
  2. The drive down to San Diego is perfect because if we leave at noon it is about exactly an hour and forty five minutes which is just as long as Buddy's nap. So she sleeps and we cruise down and have some nice time to catch up and chat.
  3. Whilst in San Diego, we went to our favorite place on the planet, the Ballast Point Brewery eighteen steps away from where my mom and dad live. Then we went out to dinner with my sister.
  4. Sunday, Ang came back up with us to LA and watched the buddy while Babe and I went out on a date. Two dates in two days. Wowee.
  5. I'm working this week from home for USC. So far its kinda ouchie hard but I'm hoping to get into a rythm. I left the house for a coffee shop today so hopefully that is more inspiring and I can get more than one organization researched - like maybe two or three!

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh!
She's up and ready for the
party and presents.

When Buddy saw it
Her eyes got big and she said,
"Oh Wow." I agree.

Man, I love Christmas.
Decorations and stockings,
lights and Santi Claus.

Christmas List

Why not make a Christmas list, right?

  • One of the biggest things I miss about NYC is the prevalence of delicious seltzer. So, my number one wish list item is a Soda Stream. Then, I can make my own seltzer and drink it all the time!
  • I always like jewelry, and think Tiffany's is a great place to get it!
  • I need a new travel coffee mug because the one I use every morning was compromised. Meaning, water got inside where there isn't supposed to be water and it was all grody. So I had to throw it away. Now, I am drinking out of a cute mug with snoopy, charlie brown and a christmas tree on it, but it doesn't keep my coffee warm.
  • I always get people delicious smelling lotions and soaps for the holidays and I like those things, too. For myself I mean. Not just for other people.
  • A new set of awesome knives that cut real well. For cooking.
Probably that's a good enough list. I don't really need anything for Christmas and it feels a little disingenuous to be making a Christmas list, but it's a fun exercise.

Wednesday Update

  • It's "cold" here. I use the quotes because cold is walking down Broadway with a windchill of 2 degrees and wet socks from slushy snow seeping in. Being that I live here, though, now, cold is 40s.
  • I am working on my proposal for USC and almost threw in the towel 18 times yesterday. Going to get it done today and send it off and if he doesn't like it, then FINE.
  • Dude. Pinterest is my new addiction. Don't go there. But, if you do, click my funny page, and laugh and laugh and laugh.

Numbers - one day late

  1. I think I'm going to be one day late on Numbers from now on. Gives me a chance to digest the weekend. Sabes?
  2. This past weekend, I went to Long Beach three times. For realsies. It's about 20 miles away, so not far, but kind of funny to keep going to there over and over and over. On Friday, Babe flew out of the LBC to fly up to the Bay to hang out with the homies. On Sat, I went to Cin's to meet the new baby who is tiny and precious. On Sun, I went to pick up Babe from the LBC airport. Thank goodness Buddy like the car or I would be screwed.
  3. On Sat, I journeyed 47 miles up the coast to my homeland, beautiful Oxnard, California to spend the weekend with BFF's familials. We had a very nice and very chill weekend. Her husband the Doctor made us a delicious dinner, BFF and I strolled the Farmer's Market and I stopped in to see her folks. I managed to consume everything in sight while I was there, though, so am clearly fasting this week.
  4. My attempts to get a tree have so far been foiled, but high prices or hour long lines. Babe is going today to pick up a tree and, in his words, nothing but death will keep him from them. We're lookin at a 7 or 8 footer me thinks.
  5. I've been working on my proposal for USC for a couple of days and hope to finish it by tomorrow. It's hard but boy oh boy is it nice to work. Hate working? Be unemployed for several months and send out 48 job applications. That'll make you like it.

Haiku Friday

A million bucks.
That's what I feel like right now.
Mama got a job!

My hard work paid off.
Working as a consultant
for a spell, then temp.

Both could become perm.
It doesn't matter to me.
I will be working!

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Pretty eventful Wednesday.

  • I am going to do a consulting gig for USC!
  • And then I am going to work at UCLA for a temporary position while this woman goes on mat leave. This should keep me employed until August 2012.
  • After 48 applications, these two gigs are with the first two folks I met with when I moved here. So there you have it.
  • We had a little power outage here in Culver City. I was pretty super excited. We had our candles going and were just sitting around talking. I was thinking long haul for sure, as I've been living in NYC for nearly a decade and when the power goes out, it's not a power outage, but a black out, and that shit goes on for days.
  • But then the power came back on.
  • I'm thinking of turning all the lights back off.
  • Hoping Buddy sleeps better tonight because last night? No bueno.
  • It's so windy here my gate outside keeps careening open, the lawn chairs in the backyard are somewhere down the street, and did I mention the power went out? Also, my allergies are kicking like Chuck Norris.

Numbers - one day late

  1. Sorry we're late! Buddy and I caught a wee tummy bug that set me back a day. She couldn't go to daycare yesterday, so you got no long blog post. I also had to reschedule two informational interviews. SIGH. We're better today though. Thank god that was a short bug, not a three day one.
  2. The four day holiday weekend was terrific. Thanksgiving day we had mine and babe's family over. That made eight adults, two kids and two babies. We had a terrific meal, the food was good and the company was awesome. It's been nine years or so since I was home for Thanksgiving so it was a great homecoming, too.
  3. The next day, we had over about twelve of our pals, plus about three or four babies. WOW! What a party. We all ate, drank, and had a beeday cake for babe.
  4. The rest of the weekend we took it super easy. We were supposed to go tree shopping on Sunday but I was wiped out, both from so much hosting and that nasty little bug. It was nice to chill though for a couple of days.
  5. Tomorrow, I have a meeting with USC, to hopefully lock down a consulting gig. Another meeting on Friday at UCLA to hopefully lock down some temporary employment. Cross your fingers yo! This would hopefully have me employed through August 2012.
  6. Yesterday, Babe turned 34! Buddy turned seventeen months! Yay!

cornbread and sausage stuffing,
and cranberry sauce.

For dessert, two pies
one blueberry, one pumpkin.
And egg nog pound cake.

Most Thankful

Buddy is the person I am most thankful for. Here she is reading us a Dr. Seuss story.

Week of Thanks!

Today I'll express my thanks for having lived in New York City for the past nine years.

Because I lived in NYC:
  • I met some of the smartest, nicest and most fun people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
  • I had a great job where I was able to be a senior staff member to one of the top research organizations in the country and help grow it from tiny to much bigger.
Because I lived in NYC:
  • I have no sense of sticker shock. I can't find things that are "expensive" here, because they are 10% cheaper than everything I paid for for the last nine years.
  • I don't think the drivers are bad here. After the shit show (excuse me) that was the streets of NYC, the people here drive like they are going to church on a sunday.
Because I lived in NYC:
  • I appreciate the weather here in Southern California.
  • I appreciate the quiet at night.
  • I appreciate my backyard and the spacious play space it provides for my buddy.
Because I lived in NYC:
  • Now I can miss it and think about it whenever I want.

Week of Thanks

I'd like to spend the week being thankful.
So, for my first day of thanks, I'm thankful for my sisters.

Here's my sister JOY, who lives in upstate NY. She is pictured here with her beautiful daughters and my baby, Buddy. Her third baby is not in this picture, but trust me. She's just as pretty as the other ones. I've been thinking of JOY a lot lately, but particularly today. I am very thankful to have her in my life.
Here's my middle Sister, Ang. She's cuddling with my Buddy. Ang and I have always been a duo, a team. She never thinks twice about giving up a weekend to take care of The Stinker. I am very thankful to have her in my life, and feel so grateful to live a mere 1 hour and thirty minutes away from her. What's that you say? San Diego is 2 hours away? Not the way my sister drives.
And here's my sister Sunny with her beautiful children. We share books, recipes, and clothing. She has been a mentor and bestie to me for a long, long time. Which is funny because we're so very young. I am very thankful to have her close by and that we are both unemployed at present because we can spend literally hours on the phone together all the time.

I could say so much more about these sisters of mine, and these pithy comments can't do them justice. But today I just want to say how thankful I am to have sisters. My life is better for it. I am a better person because of it.

I love you, girls!

  1. What a wonderful weekend! We spent our first weekend at home, just the three of us.
  2. We played in the backyard, went to a couple of stores, watched a ton of football, hung out.
  3. Saturday, we had a spontaneous Big Game watching party with Cin, Omar and Santi. Cal lost, but the score was 28-31 so that was nearly a victory in my opinion!
  4. I narrowed down 900 pictures to 64 to send out to the Buddy Fan Club.
  5. I started planning for Thanksgiving Dinner where we'll have 8 adults, two kids and two babies over for dinner.
  6. It rained all day yesterday and that was the first good rain we've had since I moved here. It was lovely - we played inside and stayed dry.

Haiku Friday

I've said it before,
but this time it's really true:
It was a great week.

Overcast here, but
in the sixties, so not cold.
Fall weather is here.

Do I miss New York?
People always ask me that.
Yeah, sometimes I do.

Happy Friday!

Good, Bad, Ugly

The Good

  • I made banana bread this week and it is good.
  • It's in the 60s here and sunny. You heard me.
  • Lots of kettles boiling, irons in the fire, buns in the oven (wait - not for me), in terms of the job situation.
  • Buddy has a little tiny ponytail now.
The Bad

  • When buddy doesn't like what is going on - say Mama is doing the dishes, or I want her to sit in her stroller, she becomes a noodle/snake like object and makes this big noise that sounds like EEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHH and it is no bueno.
The Ugly

  • My heating bill is going to be ugly. I've had central heating for the past nine years and it has been paid for by someone else. I'm sure the costs were rolled into my rent, etc., but I still didn't get a bill. Despite it being relatively warm in So Cal, my house is made of a very fine paper and it gets down to about the 40s at night, so that means it cold in here. That bill aint gonna be pretty.

At the 2011 mayoral housing, transportation and jobs summit at UCLA today.

Learning a lot, should be able to be more conversant in the LA business/politics scene.

Been saying yes to every opportunity that comes my way - dig.

Do you like my new look?

Numbers part II - job update

  1. I have submitted forty-six job applications so far. I put Buddy in daycare on October 1st, so that's when I really started focusing on this search. Six weeks ago.
  2. I've had three interviews with one non profit, and they are going to let me know if the coming week or so what the status is. I really hope I get that job so I can stop looking. Also because its a good job and the people seem really nice.
  3. On average, I've had one informational interview or meeting every two weeks.
  4. I had an in person interview a few weeks ago with a place, but they said no.
  5. A pal of mine, early on, said, listen, I bet you will send out about fifty job applications and get 2 or 3 interviews. She was 100% right. She didn't tell me any odds on getting hired, though.
  6. I may or may not start doing some consulting work for this one organization that called me. But, they are a bunch of hippies and I'm not sure how much they are willing to pay me.
  7. I had wanted a job before Thanksgiving because I was worried that once we got into the holidays people wouldn't be hiring as much. Today is November 15th. Here's hoping, you guys!

Monday, November 14, 2011

  1. Back on track this week, girls. This past weekend, I did a nice turnaround trip to San Diego to celebrate my mom's 40th birthday. (Wait...what?) Me and the buddy drove down on Friday during her nap and came back after her bathy on Saturday night. It was a very relaxing day and a half with my familials. We had a nice dinner at my ma's, went out to a casual lunch on Saturday, and I basically just hung out with family. It rained a lot for San Diego, so that was sort of surreal.
  2. Yesterday, Babe drove to see his peeps out in Hemet, so me and the Buddy experimented with Culver City public transportation. You know - the bus. It costs $1.00, has no apparent schedule and took me right to the farmer's market.
  3. My dear friend Gabby came over on Thursday and we stayed up til 1:30 talking outside in my backyard. She and I have been friends for close to thirty years - we met in kindergarten. You'd think we wouldn't have that much to talk about, but you'd be probably wrong about that.
  4. I had a pretty good job interview that Thursday. I'm up to 44 jobs applied for. This morning, I am at the coffee shop and I'm looking to add 3-5 to that total. I'm also doing a ton of networking and just meeting with people, so something should come up pretty soon? Right?

Feliz Cumpleanos, Ma

We took this picture last night of Grama surrounded by many (but not all!) of her grandchildren.

Grama! That's my ma. It's her birthday today. People always ask me what it's like to have a ma who's so young and youthful in appearance and do you know what I say? It's easy!

Happy beeday, Ma!

Job Interview

And with everything else that has been happening, and believe me dear blog readers, it is beyond belief the  number of things that have been happening, I still am on a quest for a job.

I have a third interview with a place today, it's a different position than the other two. Let's hope I nail this one, huh, so we can put this shit to bed already?

Love you

Me at 2 years old

Thanks, Ma and Dad for sending!
It's my birthday today. I am 34 years old. My 33rd year was pretty good, I have to say. Here's me and the buddy. My hair looks CRAZY but whatever. It's a cross I have to bear.

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

  1. Yesterday was the first Halloween that I got to hand out candy and I can't wait to do it again! We took Buddy to just a house or two, but she helped me pass out candy to trick or treaters.
  2. I've said it before and I'll say it again: 2011 a year of transition. I'd like 2012 to be a year of happiness and good times. You with me?
  3. My beeday is tomorrow. I am going to be 34. How bout them apples?
  4. This past weekend was another friend explosion! We went to the Cal game which was horrible because Cal sucks, but we had a great time with our pals tailgating at the rose bowl! We ate dip and sandwiches and drank beer, with four Cal alumni and two other great pals.
  5. We also had over Cin, Omar and Santi on Sunday and took them to the farmers market where it had to be more than 80 degrees. HOT, but no complaints. Not from these lips.
  6. I bought a second dress for the wedding this weekend. I hope one of them is perfect.

Haiku Monday

I cannot believe
I forgot to Haiku for
maybe the first time.

Last week was busy.
I had two job interviews!
Takes a lot of work.

We'll see what happens.
One of them wasn't too great.
The other one was.

Buddy is growing by leaps and bounds people. Starting yesterday, you can say to her "what noise does a cow make?" and she'll answer "moooooooo."

Every time she sees a doggie she says, "woof woof woof," and every time she sees an owl she says, "whoooo."

This morning, she asked for her Baba. First time!

Then, she sat in her chair saying her name.

I told her I needed to brush my teeth and she ran to the bano to hang out while I was brushing.

When her papa left for work this am, she said "Bye Dada."

Of course, the minute she woke up this morning, she asked for her "Shooooooeeeees."

Reuben Casserole Recipe

Thanks to MIL for this one! I made some changes, so I'll give you the recipe the way I made it!

Reuben Casserole

1/2 cup sour cream (I use light, as if that makes a difference. You'll see.)
1/2 cup 1,000 Island Dressing
1 pound corned beef from the deli
1 cup sauerkraut
6 slices of rye bread, cubed.
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 cups swiss cheese

Preheat oven to 350.
Use a 9x9 casserole dish. Mix up the sauerkraut with the dressing and the sour cream. Put that on the bottom of the dish. Layer the corned beef and the cheese. I added a little bit of sharp cheddar for the heck of it.
Toss the bread with the butter, cover the casserole with that.
Bake for 30 minutes, covered, then another 10-15 uncovered.

Viola!  Delicious casserole.

If you can find fresh baked rye bread, use it. So few ingredients in this casserole, you'll want each one to be the best you can find.

Numbers - one day late!

  1. Excuse my tardiness people. Yesterday, I had to take my computer to the doctor for the first time! She wasn't charging right. So they gave her a new power cord.
  2. This past weekend we had a mini shower for my pal who is having her second baby in two months! Wow! Lotsa second babies happening! No fear, blog readers. Not my second baby. Not for some time.
  3. I made a reuben casserole and I will share the recipe on my 2nd blog post today. To make up for no post yesterday.
  4. Sunday, we had the newlyweds come over for a bit and we all went to the farmers market. They are the folks whose wedding we attended about three weeks ago.
  5. Afterwards, me and Buddy took a long nap. She slept for three hours, I slept for one
  6. Then, we went by our pal's house to watch the football game and meet their pals, all who had babies. So there were about 6 babies running around? I don't know. Anything more than three feels like six.

Haiku Friday

Watching Bored to Death
on HBO On Demand
made me miss New York.

Wholly, completely.
For the first time since I left.
I want to go back.

Just for a visit.
See my old nabe and my friends.
Get my hair cut right.

A flick, a book, a show

A flick
  • I watched my annual movie! A pal at Babe's work loaned him Bridesmaids, so we took it in. (I was going to link to BFF's review of it, but I can't find it. BFF?) It was super hilarious, really gross at parts, with a little bit of romantic comedy mixed it. The main person, Kristen Wiig, is so darn funny I can't even stand it.
A book
  • I've been reading about three or four random books a week. Like, I go to the library with the Buddy strapped to my chest and pick up five of the easiest to reach books with the prettiest covers and take them home. Many aren't very good. But, I read a really good book called Cleaning Nabakov's House about a woman who lives in upstate New York, gets a divorce and loses her kids in the custody battle, then proceeds to work on getting them back. That sounds very serious, though, and this book is far lighter than that. Her writing reminds me a little bit of my comedic hero Tina Fey in the way she refers to things, like her one pair of presentable pants which she calls "The Pants" and her ex husband who she calls the experson. Anyways, it's good. Read it.
A show
  • Anyone else watching the new Buffy (SMG, not BFF's husband) show Ringer on that marvel of television, the CW? It's twisted, soapy, sexy, and full of images of my old place of residence NYC. So far, I like it a lot. But, I kinda just love SMG, so would probably be pretty happy watching her in whatever she was in.

Job Update (numbers round II?)

  • I have applied to twenty-five jobs.
  • I have had two phone interviews.
  • I have had one in-person interview (UCLA) and I was not selected. I was his second choice, however, so that's not bad.
  • I have seen only about three rejections in my email, which means people have very few manners when it comes to the hiring process.
  • I would like to be employed before the holidays because I feel like once that happens, it's going to be until January 2012 that I get a job.
  • I have one iron in the fire at a place that might hire me if they can scrape together the funding.
  • All this job searching has given me a couple of new allies here in LA that I didn't even know before moving here, but are now helping me get a job. Nice.
  • I still have a lot of connections to make and people to meet with, so am far from feeling desperation. It's only been about ten weeks that I've been looking and I'd say that's a lot of progress.

  1. Last week was one for the books. I'm glad it's over and done with.
  2. But, this weekend was beyond terrific. Babe, Buddy and I were home for the first time solo since we moved here. Is that true? Feels that way.
  3. Ang came up on Friday to watch the buddy while I had an all day conference with 700 affordable housing folks. That evening, she stayed home to mind the buddy's sleeping habits while babe and I went out dinner. Heck yeah we did. We went to Waterloo & City just up the street. He got some pasta with lobster and I got a pizza with green chorizo and an egg on it. Both of those things were good, good, good. Plus they easily have the best beer list I've seen so far in LA.
  4. On Saturday, we hung out and took it easy, then went by the LACMA for my pal Jenny's 30-something birthday. We saw a beautiful exhibit about California from the 30s to the 50s
  5. Then, me and Babe went to Bevmo for the 5cent wine sale. Do you know about this? You get one bottle of wine and the next one is 5cents. So, we got a 30 dollar bottle of wine for 5cents. Yah. Awesome.
  6. Sunday we went to a pumpkin patch, a park, watched football, and had two visitors! My pal Patricio who I have known for about twenty years came by with his lovely wife. Awesome.

Haiku Friday

At a conference
To learn about housing in
Los Angeles. Word.

Feels just like New York.
Housing people look the same
No matter the coast.

Ang is watching Bud.
She's feeling a lot better.
But is still sickie.

Feeling a lot better

Sick Day

Sorry I missed my blog update yesterday. It's because the Buddy has the croup.

You heard me. Apparently I live in 19th Century England. Or the 20s. I don't know. The croup.

I woke up in the middle of the night, not last night but the night before, and buddy was as hot as a little pinto bean. I dont know what that means, exactly, but she felt hot and little like a bean. And, she sounded exactly like Darth Vader. I am not exaggerating. I don't mean she had a barking cough, I mean she sounded like she was breathing through a giant black mask about the give orders to blow up some rebels. (Rebels? Right Babe?)

So, we took her to the emergency room. First time. 5am.

She has the croup. Which means her windpipe is all swollen. So, it sounds REALLY bad, and it can be, but rarely. Like, most kids with the croup just stay home from school for a few days and then it goes away. Every parent of every child who has had it, though, will tell you that it is the scariest illness they get. They sound like they can't get any air. I won't say much more. Because it's too horrible. She got a shot at the hospital and is totally on the mend. Her fever is gone, she doesn't sound like a Sith Lord. She's eating her eggo in her monkey pajamas watching me type.

But, no daycare this week. So that isn't muy bueno for me. But, it's okay.

Monday, October 10, 2011

  1. My oldest pal game down - not that she is super old, Ha!, we've just been friends for a long long time. Since Kindergarten, so I guess that's about 25 years? I got to meet her baby who is two months older than the buddy. Boy is she just a cutie pie.
  2. Friday night we went to a meet & greet pizza party at Buddy's daycare. Met the other moms and dads and stuff. There were two other sets of parents who also just moved here, so that was nice.
  3. Saturday, we went and walked around Venice Beach some. There's a cute street called Abbot Kinney Blvd. with lots of shops and restaurants, etc. We stopped for a couple of scoops of ice cream and it was deeeelicous.
  4. I just had to go get buddy from daycare because she has a fever! Poor little thing. It's 100.6, and I gave her tylenol and now she's taking a nap. I imagine it's because she is getting one new giant molar. Man, teething is a real bitch.

Haiku-we're not talking about baseball- Friday

When you're unemployed,
the first thing to go, besides
insurance, are pens.

When you have a job,
you have unlimited pens.
Gels, ballpoints, black, blue.

When you have no job,
you root through your purse for that
free coffee shop pen.

Good, Bad, Ugly

  • Third interview/mtg with USC today! I hope I come out of this with a job, man! That would be great.
  • It's raining her and boy is it nice. It sure is "cute" when you have 70 degrees every day for three months then it rains. Very refreshing.
  • I am pretty glad the Yankees won yesterday.

  • What could be bad? I guess I am starting to feel more pressure about getting a job because now I am an official drain on our resources. Before we were paying for daycare I wasn't creating a negative in the economy here at our house. Now? I am.

  • My cough, post cold. I sound like I have TB.

Jane Says!

Grown up Sasha (GUS) was the winner of two free tickets to see Jane's Addiction at the Ford Theater in Hollywood!
And she took me!
We went to this beautiful outdoor amphitheater, which was tiny, and grabbed a seat right smack in the middle and watched the show.
Jane's Addiction had three albums when I was in college, and we listened to all of them all the time. There is not a guitar riff that I am not familiar with on those albums. So, it was really fun to see it in person. For a second time! GUS (and others) and I saw Jane's at the Enid Festival in the late nineties in San Francisco.
They played everything from Ocean Size to Three Days, to a few off their new album.
The crowd was a little bit quiet, but we had a great time!
Here's the good friends, good music and free shows!!

Buddy at a wedding in the woods!

Published with Blogger-droid v1.7.4

  1. Buddy and I had her first cold of her second year this past weekend. She's doing much better now and so am I. I think Babe probably has it, now.
  2. I dropped her off at daycare for her official first day today.
  3. This past weekend, we went to Idyllwild for a wedding. Did you know that it is one mile high? It was absolutely beautiful. Babe's oldest friend, of about twenty years, got married. It was a lovely ceremony, and very small. About fifty people and the couple wed near a beautiful creek. I would like to go back to Idyllwild and stay there for a while.
  4. We drove to Hemet on Friday and that is 100 miles away and took us more than three hours to get there. It took us exactly two hours to get home from Idyllwild yesterday, which is forty minutes east of Hemet. Friday afternoon drives? No thank you.
  5. It is so quiet here without my buddy. It could also be that my ears are still plugged up from the drive down the mountain, coupled with still being a little sick.

Haiku Friday

Late haiku today.
We're on our way to Hemet,
To see the in-laws.

Wedding to attend,
In lovely idyllwild.
I have never been.

Some day, we'll stay home.
Get to explore LA some.
Well, probably not.

Misc. Items

  • I sure do love baseball, you guys! The Rays won against the Yankees in a nail biter and the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox. What the hell? I was happy for the Rays, they are kinda my second favorite baseball team. Even though I guess it would be easier for the Yanks to beat the Red Sox in the playoffs, but it's the playoffs. Who wants easier?
  • Do you know what show I love? Chopped on the Food Network. Why? I have no idea. But a bunch of chefs running around trying to make a delicious meal out of kettle corn, white fish, macaroons and fresh mint is incredibly entertaining.
  • So far, since I moved to California from NYC three months ago, I've seen about ten friends from NYC. Here's to living in a place that people want to visit!
  • I've read about fifteen books in the last two months. At some point, I'll provide a list and some recommendations. As for now, I can say thank you library. You make it easy to read a ton of books even though I have no money to buy them.
  • I'm excited for the buddy to start daycare, but I definitely already cried today when she and I were dancing around the house. I just love her so much. Too bad I can't look for a job and take care of a fifteen month old.
  • Yeah, she's fifteen months today. I totally dumped my plan to not call her by how many months she is. When your buddy is under two years, it's just how you roll. Truth! I speak it.
  • Other things I'm watching on TV besides baseball: Ringer - the new Buffy show, Survivor and Yo Gabba Gabba. Ha!

Hippie Mumbo Jumbo

So, I started taking Buddy to Baby Sing and Sign at the Y because we have a Y membership and I think its better for her to be around other buddies at least a couple times a week instead of just me.

Anyways, so I've always sort of laughed at people who do baby sign. I can't help it, I'm a hater. But, I've been using a few signs around the house anyways. Just because, if it helps her as a toddler communicate, what can be wrong with that? As far as I know, nothing can be more frustrating than being a toddler. So! I've been doing the sign for "more" when I say more to ask her if she wants more of anything. (Here's a chart so you can see what I'm talking about.)

So! Yesterday, she was sitting at the table eating a strawberry, and she looked at me and DID THE SIGN FOR MORE. So I gave her another strawberry. Who do you like that hippie mumbo jumbo shit?

  1. This past weekend was San Diego. For the second bachelor party in two weeks, though one Babe attended and the other one I attended. As you know.
  2. I spent the weekend with my familials who love to play with the buddy. It makes me so happy. Babe hit up three breweries, one baseball game and a bunch of bars afterwards.
  3. We drove down to San Di on Friday in less than two hours and it took about the same to drive home on Sunday. Nice. Buddy slept the whole way each time. Here's to timing.
  4. This week we start the transition to three day a week daycare. We're going over in about forty five minutes. I know Buddy will love it, and I'll be glad to have time to do other things, but of course I am already missing her little martian body.
  5. Next weekend is the wedding in Idylwild. I really can't wait til we can just live here in LA and not have to travel every weekend. There are so many places I want to explore! But, soon enough. I mean, we live here for good now so it's not like we're not going to have time. Eventually. In about four to six weeks.

Haiku Friday

Sort of a long week.
Glad the Long Beach peeps swung by
for dinner last night.

Traveling again
but this time just driving there.
To San Diego.

A bachelor party,
Babe this time, so that's real nice.
We're just taking turns.

Stay at Home Mom Stories

  • Yesterday I told Babe a story about Buddy taking a poop and doing a take-a-poop dance. That is a perfect example of a Stay At Home Mom story.
  • If you tell the buddy that we're going outside, she'll bring you her shoes.
  • I tried giving her toast instead of an eggo this morning and she got mad. Then I gave her the eggo and she ate it all.
  • We found an AWESOME daycare that we love and Buddy is going to start 3 days a week probably week after next. She is going to love it. They have all sorts of activities and toys and I just know she is going to be so happy there. She looooves other kids. Loves them.

Numbers - Vegas edition

  1. Dude, went to Vegas for the first time in my adult life. Last time I was there, I was about thirteen.
  2. That place is crazy. It's sort of like if Times Square became an entire city. There are thousands of people everywhere. Many of them are drunk. Everyone is wearing crazy shit.
  3. I had a good time, except for when I was having a bad time. Example - I waited in a line of about 100 people to check into my hotel, then it took me an hour to get from my hotel the .9 miles to the place everyone was chilling. But, then when I got to that place it was awesome.
  4. I gambled with $100 and left with $205. Nice!
  5. It was the first time I left the Buddy overnight. Luckily I left her with her papa so that left me without any worries.
  6. I danced about half of the time I was in Vegas. I was with thirteen other people on a bachelor(ette) party and boy did we just have a great time.
  7. It is a 45 minute flight from LA to Las Vegas. One of my flights was free with JetBlue. The other cost $60. Then, I had to pay FORTY dollars for my carry-on. What what??
  8. I slept for maybe one hour on Saturday night. So, I took two naps yesterday. My friend Gabs said it would take me one week to recover from Vegas. I think she's right.

Sort of excited, why not?
New shoes, new hairdo.

Never been away

She'll be okay, though.

She and her papa
will have a super fun time.

Misc. Items/General Update

  • Checking out daycares on Monday for the buddy. So I can really start looking for a job!
  • In the six weeks of looking for work, I have applied to thirteen jobs, have had a phone interview, an in person interview, and two informational interviews.
  • This weekend, I am going to Vegas for Ruby & Joaquin's bachelorette party. Should be wild, as I have never been.
  • Next weekend, Babe has a bachelor party, so we are heading down the San Diego.
  • The weekend after that, is the wedding for the bachelor in Idylwild.
  • The weekend after that, I finally get to meet my oldest friend Gabby's baby.
  • Right, right now I am sitting here watching Buddy eat Honey Bunches of Oats, with her feet on the table.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good

  • Amy is here! Back from London, for good.
  • Buddy slept good last night, so I slept good last night.
The Bad

  • I think a lot of the peaches and nectarines I got from CostCo are already going bad.
  • I haven't been doing a great job on my job search lately.
The Ugly

  • The murderous thoughts I had this morning at the person who crank called Babe at 6:40 and woke the buddy up for the day.

Monday, September 12, 2011

What a weekend!

  1. Friday night, seven of us went to dinner at Pitfire Pizza. It's as kid-friendly joint near to the pad. Mike, Mike, Molly and me and three babies had pizza and beer. Yes, beer I had my first beer all week on Friday night and boy was it delicious!
  2. Saturday, me and Babe hung around and took it easy. Listened to our California Golden Bears win their second in a row. I also got ready to go to my first award show!
  3. Saturday night, Ruby and I went to the Alma awards! It was so much fun! I got to see a lot of movie and TV stars like Antonio Banderas, Eva Longoria, Jessica Alba and a bunch of other Latino Hotties. There were also some awesome musical performances like Pitbull and GLORIA ESTEFAN. Not together, but still. I mean this wasn't the grammys or anything. Dang! It was dope. The awards were like three hours long but it flew by.
  4. Then, we went to the VIP after party on the top floor of this hottttt outdoor mall in Santa Monica. Ozomatli performed, there was Champagne everywhere (I only had two glasses - I was driving you know!) and we danced the night away! There were stars, and gowns, and food. Dang. It was so fun.
  5. THEN! On Sunday, me and Babe went to see the twenty-eight time world champion Yankees win against the Anaheim Angels of Anaheim. It was a nail-biter, with the Angels of Anaheim in the lead a lot of the time. We totally won though and it was so good. They had this super sad 9/11 commemoration that made me cry like a baby. Speaking of babies, Ang watched the Buddy so me and Babe could have a date to the game!

Haiku Friday

The nine eleven
coverage reminds me of
many, many things.

Grief, confusion and
anger. It also reminds
me of my hatred.

For Bin Laden? No.
My absolute hatred of
George W. Bush.
I hope everyone
back home in New York City
is safe this weekend.

What a morning. First, we woke up to a major ant infestation in our kitchen. So gross. So, I called Terminex and they are coming tomorrow morning to kill all those suckers.

Then, Buddy threw my coffee all over me. Not cool, buddy.

Then, I took her to a mommy and me class which is for "walkers" but is really for "wild, running boys who are three times bigger than my baby," so we're going to go to the baby class on Tuesday.

Then, we got home and there were stupid ants all over the place so I had to hose down the house.

Then, I got buddy down for a nap and now I think I am going to either a) work on cover letters/job search or b) read a magazine. Ha!

I'll tell you about the book I read some other time.

I want to tell you abt a book I just finished reading but a certain somebody doesn't really want me to blog.

Pimento Dip

My Pimento Dip comes from Paula Deen, by way of my MIL. Here's a link's the Ms. Deen's recipe, and here's how I do it:

3 oz cream cheese, softened
1 cup jack
1 cup cheddar
small jar of pimentos, chopped (Ms. Deen says 2 tbspns, I just use the whole jar. What else are you going to use them for if you don't use that jar up?)
1/2 cup mayo (I don't think I use that much)
Grated onion (about a tbspn, I never measure)
a dash of salt, pepper and garlic powder

Blend everything together, toss it in the fridge. This is a delicious dip for carrots, crackers or chips. I think its best with carrots and celery because its so cheesy and rich. In the south it's used as a sandwich spread and that sounds good to me, too!

Numbers! Do it!

  1. What a brilliant three day weekend, huh? We sure did a lot of fun stuff.
  2. We had an impromptu bbq on Friday night with three people over. We had a lovely dinner outside and bs'd for a long while. We also played darts which is my new favorite thing to do.
  3. Saturday, my sister and her three kiddies came over. We went to the pool and ate pizza. It was just a lovely day.
  4. Sunday, BFF and her family came over. And my other sister. So, I had two sisters, one BFF, three babies and two kids, plus two dudes, at the pad. We had a wee BBQ and ate burgers and drank beers and played darts. Sensing a theme here? That was our second BBQ of three in one weekend.
  5. Yesterday, my folks came up for lunch. We had a BBQ again and hung out outside. Buddy played in the kiddie pool. It was a short trip for them, but Buddy (and I) were so happy to see them. They timed it so they got here at the end of her first nap and left before her second one.
  6. Doesn't seem like a long list of things done this past three day weekend but I think it took a lot out of us! Especially Babe who valiantly grilled for everyone. I'm beat today and have decided to abstain from beer for some time. I'm betting that time will be Friday. Ha!

Good beers on tap, too.

With actual soft ground instead of sand.

Misc. Items

  • I've been applying for jobs, but not at the rate of two a day like I would like. I didn't do any yesterday. Being a job searcher with a baby is a challenge. It's fine though. I will get a job and then I'll be working for the next thirty years, so what is my rush?
  • I did have a meeting with the director of a research center out here, at USC. Not sure what it all means, but it was a great meeting and he seems pretty interested in me being a part of his center. Who knows?
  • Buddy is going to turn into a blueberry, that's how many she eats.
  • I haven't been watching any TV lately except the Yankee games. I've been reading a lot, though. I am stuck in my youth and just finished the Little House on the Prairie series as well as Pride and Prejudice, which I never read before. Both of them make me want to use semi colons, wear a corset and petticoats, and talk at length about random decor, the weather, and how to make butter.

Today, tomorrow and yesterday

  • is laundry day.
  • we are also running errands: peet's coffee to use my gift card, bed bath and beyond to get a full length mirror, culver city library to join the library.
  • things I do every day: apply for two jobs (I try) and take two walks.
  • Tomorrow I have a meeting at USC with the guy who is in charge of the Lusk Center. Let's hope this goes well and I leave with a job offer. Ha! Yeah right.
  • I went to the park with GUS and buddy. It was a beautiful day and we played and walked around in the sunshine. I also applied for one job and took two walks. And cleaned up the house.

What a gorgeous weekend.
  1. It was amazing this weekend. Hot, but not too hot. 80s I suppose. Shiny sun, low humidity.
  2. I was somewhat obsessed with Irene coverage, as I was thinking of all my peeps back home. I felt SO MUCH BETTER after watching NY1 online. Hearing Pat Kiernan and Kristen Shaughnessy give an update on Irene made me feel prepared and like I knew what was really going on. The NYTimes coverage was muy disappointing.
  3. As you know, we had quite a few guests upon moving into this place, and as such, we have a wide variety of artifacts from these visitors. We have one plastic "contigo" water bottle, one pair of man chonies, one pair of argyle socks, one polo shirt from Banana, one sweatshirt, one set of camping gear. I'm drinking out of the contigo water bottle, that's what made me think of it. And wearing the man chonies. Just kidding.
  4. Buddy is 14 months old today! Eat that, America! (What is wrong with me?)
  5. We did three things on Saturday: costco in the morning pre buddy's first nap, Babe's company picnic post buddy's first nap, then she slept on the way to Long Beach where we saw Cin, Omar and Santi. What a fun old Saturday!
  6. Yesterday, we did two things (mainly): farmers market in the morning with GUS, then we went to the Culver City festival where we ate an Indian taco.
  7. I also went to the coffee shop for three hours on Sunday morning, redid my resume and applied for three jobs.

Earthquakes, hurricanes,
looks like we got out just in
nick of time, right?

Courtesy's being
evacuated. Subway
is shutting down soon.

What would we have done?
Trapped with Buddy, on the tenth?
Watching it go down.

Tomato Pie

So, this house came with a tomato plant that had a whole bunch of tomatoes on it, ready to ripen. Now is that time! Beautiful, dark red tomatoes on the vine. So, I wasn't sure what I would do with them - we always eat Tomato, Basil, Mozzarella salad, or Death Row Salad we call it. (Because Babe would include it in his last meal if he were on death row. Speaking of last meals on death row meals, here are some creepy pictures of people's last meals.)

Wow. So in any case, I didn't want to make that because I always so, so instead I wanted to make Tomato Pie. I've had it before in Connecticut at my old boss's house (speaking of jobs, I didn't get that one I applied for) and I looked up the recipe online. Here is the one I used! Taken from Simply Recipes.)

  • 1 9-inch pie shell (see pie crust recipe for homemade version)
  • 1/2 yellow or red onion, chopped
  • 3-4 tomatoes, cut in half horizontally, squeezed to remove excess juice, roughly chopped, to yield approximately 3 cups chopped tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup sliced basil (about 8 leaves)*
  • 2 cups grated cheese (combination of sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack, or Gruyere or Mozarella)
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon (or more to taste) of Frank's Hot Sauce (or Tabasco)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

*To slice basil, chiffonade them by stacking the leaves on top of each other, roll them up like a cigar, starting at one end slice the "cigar" crosswise in thin slices.

1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Place pie shell in oven and cook for 8-10 minutes or longer until lightly golden. If you are starting with a frozen crust, you'll need to cook it a little longer. If you are using a homemade crust, freeze the crust first, then line the crust with aluminum foil and pre-bake it for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and bake an additional 10 minutes.

2 Squeeze as much moisture as you can out of the chopped tomatoes, using either paper towels, a clean dish towel, or a potato ricer.

3 Sprinkle the bottom of the pre-cooked pie shell with chopped onion. Spread the chopped tomatoes over the onions. Sprinkle the sliced basil over the tomatoes.

4 In a medium bowl, mix together the grated cheese, mayonnaise, Tabasco, a sprinkling of salt and freshly ground black pepper. The mixture should be the consistency of a gooey snow ball. Spread the cheese mixture over the tomatoes.

5 Place in oven and bake until browned and bubbly, anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes.

Today, tomorrow and yesterday

  • Tuesday is laundry day. I made that up. See how I do that? Last Tuesday, my sister was here and she helped me get all the laundry done. So I'm going to see how I do on my own today. Being that I still have a basket of clothes to fold from last week I don't have a whole lot of faith but I will make this my goal and I shall make it happen.
  • I think I'm going to make a tomato pie. Again, we'll see.
  • I have an informational interview with Century Housing here in Culver City. Gonna get my housing on. Grown Up Sasha is going to watch the buddy, bless her heart.
  • I joined the Y, took buddy for a swim, and went to LAX for the first time. I mean the first time I drove there. I've been there a lot of times. It took 8 minutes to get there from my house. Picked up GUS and her man. You? What did you do yesterday?

  1. This post is brought to you by the number one.
  2. On Saturday, we went to Oxnard for Queso's first birthday party! His actual first birthday is on Wednesday.
  3. We had so much fun! We played and played. It was BFF's first fiesta in her new house and it went off without a hitch.
  4. Although I promised to continue introducing buddy as a one year old, I've had to say she is thirteen months or almost fourteen months because I've been talking with parents who have babies around the same age. I can't break the code, guys.
  5. We crashed in Oxnard and drove home on the one, in less than one hour.
  6. Yesterday felt like our first Sunday at home. We drove around a bit, went to the grocery store, watched the Yanks, Babe did stuff outside. It was awesome.
  7. I'm still waiting to hear back from that first interview I had, but have applied to a few more gigs since then. Nice! I'm not in too much of a rush because the Little Buddy and I have so much fun together it is close to impossible to put it into words.

Haiku Friday

Uncle Oi flaked-ded.
His excuse? Deadlines at work.
I guess that's valid.

Tomorrow, Oxnard
for Capood's beeday party.
Shotgunning beer cans?

I bet I'll drive home.
Babe can't disappoint the doc,
has to drink for Oi.

Today, tomorrow, and yesterday

  • We're gonna run around a little bit and do errands. I might go to the Culver City Y and see if there is something for me and the buddy to do, so she doesn't get tired of just playing with me all the time. I'm actually not really worried about that because of the amount of visitors and family we've had over the past weeks, but next week is looking a little sparse, so I should probably try to get her around other peeps. Who the heck knows? I make this stuff up all the time.
  • Tomorrow Santi and his parents are coming up from LBC and Uncle Ois is coming down from the bay. We are going to play in the backyard, and eat and drink and be merry. I just love it.
  • Yesterday was our 8-year anniversary. Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes! MIL and FIL watched the buddy during the day so I could go have meet with this lady from USC who knows a lot of people. And then after we put the buddy to bed, they held down the fort so we could go out to dinner.
  • Did you hear me? Babe and I went out to dinner. What I mean by that is, we went out, sat at a table, ordered food and wine, ate it and talked to each other. About the food, about the wine, about his work, about my meeting with the USC lady, about living in California, about the buddy, about the weather. Whatever. We talked to each other, outside, in the real world. I wore my new jeans and put make up on.
  • Did you hear me? I put make up on. Yeah. You heard me. And not just lipstick either. Ha!

Good, bad, ugly

  • Weather, farmers markets, visits from aunties and nephews, family birthday parties, samosa house, pals.
  • Ice cream from Thrifty.
  • BBQs in the backyard.
  • Thinking about finding daycare for the buddy.
  • The buddy's total disregard for drinking milk, and still drinking formula even though that shit is expensive.
  • Dude, my heels from walking around in flip flops for ages. Sorry but it's true.

Wow! It has been mighty busy!
  1. We went to Long Beach for Omar's 30-something birthday on Saturday! What a neat party with all sort of awesome people to talk with. We only stayed for an hour or two but it was a super fun party.
  2. Then on Sunday, we had BenBen's sixth birthday party! Wow, he was so cute all dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow! And there were two cakes. And there were a lot of kids and really nice people in attendance. It was a nice day.
  3. On Friday night, we spent the evening in our backyard, grilling and drinking beers with three pals from NYC, one who has recently relocated to the Bay Area! It was so much fun, I was so happy. We played about four games of darts. Ha! Rad.
  4. With the NYers (Simon and Courtesy), we watched this clip about forty times: SNL Digital Short featuring Michael Bolton. Oh how we laughed and laughed.

Haiku Friday

Severe writers block.
Leads to boring ass haiku.
About nothing much.

Drank too much coffee.
Head might spin off into space.
The headless codfish.

Another nice day.
That doesn't get old, does it?
At least not so far.
