Bride's

Every year (semester?) I do a lecture on bridal magazines for one of my old professors here at NYU. When I was getting my master's in communications, I was planning my wedding so used what I was doing at the time to inform my research. Since then, I've gone back to the topic twice a year and gone over it with students. Each semester, I buy a new bridal magazine to update my "sample" and comb through it for interesting pieces.

When I started this research, there was only one study written about weddings. Wedding were sort of an understudied topic. There is just no way you could say that now. There are more than fifteen shows on TV now about weddings - from My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding to (I kid you not) My Big Redneck Wedding.

Anyways, it's kind of fun to do this every year and think about the stuff I used to study all the time (gender, communications, etc.) but now barely think about at all.

Misc. Items

  • Last night, Babe hooked up the computer to the giant TV so now we can watch anything on the TV. For example, you can go to netflix and stream movies and shows and they will show up giant on my TV. Or, if you miss an episode of your favorite Sunday night show because March Madness screws up your DVR and you end up recording 60 minutes instead of Amazing Race, you can put it on your computer and it will show up giant on your TV. Wow. Thanks, Abe.
  • It's raining cats and dogs here. I mean super raining, ya'all. I've got the galoshes, rain coat and umbrella working for me today.
  • Have I told you guys how much I love being pregnant? I just love it. It's so cute and fun. I feel like a hundred million dollars and I have my little buddy with me always. Last night, I went to H20 aerobics and just had to laugh as I was running around in the pool and my little buddy was bouncing around with me. Then, I was laying there watching Jack Bauer kick ass on 24 and literally could see my tummy moving all over the place, como Alien but not scary.
  • I've never seen Alien.
  • In the next less than three months, I am going to: two yankees games and two Pearl Jam shows. Hooray for tickets! I'm doing little else besides going to yoga a lot and probably hanging in the nabe. Let me know if you want to hang out. Ha!

Numbers

Since we last chatted, I:
  • Watched a lot of March Madness's Sweet Sixteen? Who cares though. It's not like I have a pool.
  • Went out to dinner with three pals to Taqueria de los Muertos and went out to Soda bar afterward. That's such a classic bar. Love it.
  • Had the party for the release of our 2009 report. It included cupcakes from this spot: Sugar Sweet Sunshine, 126 Rivington. You should do yourself a favor and go get a cupcake from there. Tell em I sent you.
  • Watched one movie: Jennifer's Body. This teenage horror flick was written by the lady who wrote Juno (Diablo Cody) and you can tell. The dialogue is funny and the movie really sounds like a bunch of teenagers talking. It is a horror flick, so it is rotten and gross but also sort of awesome. Plus, that chick is a hottie.

Sunday conversation

Cod: Hey Babe, how many oreos do you think are in a serving size?
Babe: Um...eight?
(Cod checks back of package.)
Cod: Well, no. No, it's 3.

See?

Spring IS coming. Even thought it's only, you know, 30 degrees outside.

Haiku Friday

Complicated week.
So elated from my trip,
full of love, happy.

So much bad news, though.
Three terrible happenings.
I won't say too much.

The amount of work
left for me after vacay?
Extraordinary.

Homies

From December 2009.

Yeah yeah!

Babe, G, and I went to see Fela last night on Broadway. Everything about it was pretty great - the theater was decorated with lights and signs and masks and art. The singing was good. But the dancing. The dancing was absolutely incredible. Those dances had the sickest bodies on the planet, dude. They worked it out for like three hours in a row. Yah, yah. I loved it. I am not so familiar with Fela or his music - I don't know how we missed that a Berkeley, you know? But Babe and I really didn't know. I know now, though. Thumbs way up, kids!

Misc. Items

  • Last night's LOST was the best episode ever. I don't have your links yet b/c the guys hasn't posted it yet. But as soon as I have it, you will.
  • I got my nails painted watermelon colored for when I was home in San Diego for my shower and it makes me so happy to see them clicking on the keyboard.
  • We got burritos today from the burrito truck on Wooster and something else in Soho. After a week of eating Mexican food in California I was concerned that this wouldn't be as good as I wanted it to be, but it totally is! It totally is good.
  • Did I tell you how fun my vacation I was? And how happy I was that everyone came down to my baby shower and bar b que in San Diego and I think about it all the time?

Back from Vacay! What a day!

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Drove, with Babe, 1396 miles around California.
  2. We saw three babies, two pregnant people, and about 12 or 15 really good friends. (Some of those were the pregnant people.)
  3. Ate good meals everywhere, and I will tell you more about them throughout the week, but I had: Lolita's twice, Topper's once, home-cooked delicious meals made for me by friends at least three times.
  4. Hung out with my family in San Diego for at least four days and ate two delicious bar-b-ques made by my mom and dad (and a lot of other people helped).
  5. Hung out with my niece (7!) and my nephew (4!).
  6. Hung out with my friend's teenager who just turned FIFTEEN. That makes me old.
  7. Enjoyed mid-70 degree weather every single day.
  8. Got 4 pairs of shoes for the price of one pair of boots.
  9. Got two bags of maternity clothes from recently pregnant friends.
  10. Had a wonderful, beautiful, and delicious vacation with Babe in my number one state, California. More to come this week!

Numbers - California edition

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Went from NYC where it was in the 40s and we were expecting 4 inches of rain to Southern California where it is in the 70s and there is not a cloud in sight.
  2. Drove one and a half hours from San Diego to Long Beach then 1 hour and a little bit more to Oxnard. Well, Babe drove. I manned the radio, mostly KROQ.
  3. Flew from JFK to San Diego. Flight was early for the 2nd time in a row. Well, again, I didn't fly the plane, I was a passenger. I watched one full movie: Flashdance, and two partials: Oh Brother, where art thou and Dodgeball.
  4. Hung out with my familials who I just stinkin love. It's nice to see them a mere 10 weeks after we were here last.
  5. Saw some teenagers perform one of my favorite shows of all time, Sound of Music. Good stuff! They actors were between the ages of 5 and 17.
  6. Bought 4 pairs of shoes for $130. I heart the mall.

THINGS I NOTICED - DR. LINUS

Just let him sleep

This morning on the crowded rush hour train there was a guy sleeping on five seats. One of those three seaters then his feet were up on the two seater part. I thought it was kind of funny the way everyone just sorta let him sleep, even though there were plenty of people standing.

See? New Yorkers are super nice. Fella needed his rest.

International Day of Awesomeness

Today, apparently, is the International Day of Awesomeness. Celebrated every year on March 10th, not coincidentally Chuck Norris's birthday, you're supposed to do something today to celebrate someone's awesomeness.

I was trying to think of who I ought to commemorate, should it be Babe, who is pretty much the most awesome person I know, or should it be a family member like my Dad who, just this morning I was thinking about, even though I had idea it was International Day of Awesomeness, or should it be a pal of mine, who are generally pretty awesome.

No, I decided, after sitting here for a few minutes, that I would commemorate hipsters who ride the G train on this international day of awesomeness. For there is no one more fashion forward (or fashion blind as it were), no one more wrapped up in their own self and own awesomeness and thus unaware of anything real in the world other than themselves, and no one who thinks about being cool more than they do.

Most people I know who are cool (and or awesome) just are so. They don't really try to be anything. Take Babe, or my pals, or my Dad, for instance. These are examples of people who just wake up in the morning and decide, you know what? Today I'm going to kick ass in the world and do my thing.

Know what hipsters think about in the morning? What exactly can I wear today that will show how fashion forward I am and how incredibly awesome I am at a) picking out clothes and b) caring about nothing real at all.

So, happy International Day of Awesomeness, Hipsters! I salute you and your ugly glasses, your purple checked scarves, and your run of the mill cheap shoes. May today be your day!

Spring

Spring is just around the corner, you can really tell today. Well yesterday, too. It was about 58 degrees here yesterday. About 58, huh? Could I be a little more exact?

I have a bet I hope I lose with my coworker. He says it will be 70 by the end of March, I say zero chance. If he wins, I buy him a beer. If I win, he buys me candy. I love candy. I love cadbury mini eggs like it is my job.

I also love clementines, yoga and bagels.

And, jokes about bacon.

Numbers!

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Watched The Hangover for the fifth or fiftieth time. Funniest movie in a long time, ya'all.
  2. Went to yoga on Fifth and Sackett.
  3. Went to Brooklyn Industries and literally spend $25 on a onesie. Oh Brooklyn Industries, you little devil.
  4. Went shopping in the 'hood - took a page from my New Yorker and bought specialty items at specialty Brooklyn stores. One or two of them being gifts for people who read this blog so I don't want to say too much! The article I link to is hilarious, by the way, and you should read it if you have a minute.
  5. Went out to dinner with some pals to South Brooklyn Pizza on Court Street for a couple delicious pies. Babe's favorite beer, Peroni, was on tap there, too. (Huh, Babe? You love Peroni.)
  6. Watched the 82nd annual Oscar's. There was a pool. I got 22 points. The winner had 23! DANG! Jeff Bridges is hilarity.
  7. Rode the G train a lot. Like 4 or 6 times a lot.

Clash of the Titans

Picture one. Bad graphics from Clash of the Titans.
Picture 2: the only other thing I remember about this movie. That, and the title wave! Oh yeah, do you remember the tidal wave?
New movie posters. These line the subway stations right now.
***
We used to watch this when I was a kid. It used to come on KTLA channel 5. Even then, the graphics were so bad. As illustrated in picture one, above. It's actually the thing I remember most about the movie. Well, that and Medusa. What a crazy power, right? All you had to do was look at her and you would turn to stone. Huge bummer if you accidentally took a peek.

Did you guys watch this when you were kids??

Things I Noticed

Doc Jensen

Watching with Kristin

My own two cents? Last night's episode was effing crazy. Sayid is one tormented and angry mofo and his episodes are always super violent. This one was no exception. Seeing that crazy dude Kimi after all this time was totally messed up, and I'm glad he left the show the way he did. 10 more episodes left in the whole show, you guys! Dang!

Going to California

Dudes, heading out for vacay soon, and not a moment too soon! I can't wait to see my familials and my pals (one in the same!) out in California. We're off on a might road trip, this is how we're rolling:

Fly from NYC to San Diego.

Roll from San Diego to Long Beach, then to Oxnard.

Go from Oxnard to the Bay Area, San Francisco and Oakland.

Then Oakland to Fresno.

Then Fresno to San Diego.

A culinary tour I tell you!!

Misc. Items

  • Ang got some old pics scanned. I love this one of me and my sisters in our moccasins. I bet you can guess which one I am. I swear to god no one is cuter than my sister Angela.
  • Recently finished a book called Amsterdam by Ian McEwan, who wrote Atonement among many other things. Kind of a tremendous story about two best friends who go at it - and I mean really go at it over several fundamentally moral issues. The thing about this book - neither one of those guys is a hero in any way. They are both really awful men who as a reader you have very little sympathy for. Dry, interesting and pretty British. Anyone else read it?
  • Our cable box busted on Sunday night so I'm totally behind on TV watching. No Amazing Race! Babe went today and got a new one so we have it in time for LOST. Otherwise what would I have done, people? Seriously.

Numbers

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Along with all NYers, experienced one of the biggest snowstorms we've ever had! The snow fell for 31 hours and we got about 20 inches. What fun.
  2. Watched a pretty funny movie: 500 Days of Summer. It featured the lovely Zooey Deschanel and some adorable boy who have a love affair....sorta. The soundtrack was amazing, could have been a mix tape but together by SW1 for me. I recommend.
  3. Canceled our trip to Phillie, as my pal's husband got super sick. Luckily the Bolt Bus tickets were only about $12 each way, so we didn't lose out on too much money.
  4. Had a delicious dinner at General Greene on Dekalb. That's a great spot in our neighborhood. Everything was good, except the dessert wasn't really delicious. Oh well. It was our third time there and I'd also recommend.
  5. Decided last minute to take a mini road trip (not really, guys) to Long Island. Babe rented a giant car and we went out to Buy Buy Baby and to IKEA to finish our registry and to get a dresser for the BABY. That was super fun trip and a great way to spend a Sunday. We did the whole thing in about 7 hours and we were super beat when we were done, but all done!
