Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Had Samois, my friend for 13 years, Babes' for 14, stay at the pad for a couple days.
  2. We watched the Big Game and the California Golden Bears kicked Stanfurds ass for the 6th year in a row.
  3. Watched like 11 football games on TV on Sunday. Well, they did. I cleaned out my closet and read.
  4. Took part in the consumption of 60 buffalo wings from Atomic Wings.
  5. Ate dinner at 67 Burger on Sunday night.
  6. Took care of my sick husband who had a fever of 101. Swine flu? I hope not.
  7. Watched two episodes of Mad Men on Friday night. And two episodes of a show that comes on CW. I won't tell you which one.
  8. Skyped for the second time. That is a neat thing, let me tell you.

Haiku Worst Commute Ever Friday

Was already late,
left my house at 8:40
work - 10 after nine.

Busted ass C train
clunking along down the tracks
late but still moving.

Then, the train just stopped.
lights turned off, no air. Sat there
for thirty minutes.

NYC

I've been getting my NYC on lately. I know that sounds a little redundant, since I live here, but it's true. Watching Mad Men, reading books. I just finished When Kafka was the Rage about Greenwich Village in 1946. It's unfinished, I guess, but was still very interesting, short, and beautifully written.

I've also been reading my NY Magazine lately, as opposed to ignoring it. I feel that one might actually get dumber when reading this publication. I'm not sure. I'll let you know if my intelligence slips any further. Not sure I'll renew my subscription. After they called my neighborhood the "greater williamsburg area" I was a little disgusted.

Then, I just got these AWESOME pictures from Cindy LooHoo that made me miss her even more than I usually do. She takes such good pictures and really makes our City look incredible.
A house in our neighborhood, Clinton Hill. Not Greater Williamsburg.
The view from my roof at work.
Central Park.

Fort Green Park in late March. The gang at La Palapa!

Thanks, Cin!

Hahahaha

Thanks, BON for the funny submission!

Oscar Wao

I'm back to reading good book that I can actually talk about here. Hooray! I'm still going to read the crap books behind your back, but at least I'll have something to talk about periodically.

I just finished the Pulitzer Prize winning The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. They don't just give those pulitzers away, let me tell you. This is a tough book - in your face with violence at times, and sad. But it is also incredibly interesting and full of historical facts you think must be true. Or at least are believable.

The Times review says it better than I can:

Díaz’s novel also has a wild, capacious spirit, making it feel much larger than it is. Within its relatively compact span, “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” contains an unruly multitude of styles and genres. The tale of Oscar’s coming-of-age is in some ways the book’s thinnest layer, a young-adult melodrama draped over a multigenerational immigrant family chronicle that dabbles in tropical magic realism, punk-rock feminism, hip-hop machismo, post-postmodern pyrotechnics and enough polymorphous multiculturalism to fill up an Introduction to Cultural Studies syllabus.

Numbers

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Watched three episodes of the first season of Mad Men.
  2. Drove four hours one way and four hours back to Glens Falls to see my sister & her family.
  3. I found out it only takes 5 and a half hours to drive from Brooklyn to Martha's Vineyard, not seven like I thought.
  4. I watched the California Golden Bears beat the Wildcats by a score of 24 - 16. We are ranked again - 25, but still.
  5. Finished one book - The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. Will share a review of that later in the week.
  6. Watched one episode of Amazing Race and one of Survivor. Man, I watch a lot of TV.
  7. Took a two mile walk along the Hudson - it sure was pretty. The Hudson is skinny up there by Glens Falls.

Animoos

This ones for you, Nancy. You guys know I love my Big Picture by the Boston Globe. Look at this one!!! It's full of animals. Look at the monkey punching his mom.

Reminds me of that wedding picture of Dr. Brad punching Randi.

Not that either one is like a monkey, but just one person punching someone he loves very much is all.

(PS:Thanks, Ang for this pic!)

The 40s & 50s

Started Mad Men the other day. Already getting caught up! Just finished the 3rd episode of the first season and have a lot of questions. It makes me think about a lot of things - why are these people so unhappy?

As a supplement to my viewing, I am also reading When Kafka was the Rage, a memoir from the 40s that takes place in Greenwich Village in NYC. It's a neat book that shows an entirely different side of life than the Mad Men series. Whereas the Mad Men are totally middle class executives with stay at home wives in Greenwich, CT, these characters in the Kafka book are boho artists who only care about painting, writing, reading.

It will be interesting to see what people watch and read about the 2000s in NYC in 60 years.

Numbers

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Went to the 4th Ave. Pub for the first time for a pal's birthday. Nice spot - free hot and delicious popcorn!
  2. Went into the city to get my hair cut - the A and C trains were both broken, so I had to sit on the bus for 20 minutes before giving up and taking a $20 cab ride into the city.
  3. Had a $5 smoothie from the street fair.
  4. Had about 25 people over for a wee housewarming birthday party on Saturday night. That's about 15 less than I planned for but was still a rockin good time. We have a lot of beer leftover, so if you want some, come on over.
  5. Took it super easy yesterday, walked into the park and ate my breakfast with Babe (I guess lunch, since it was about 3) and enjoyed the upper 60 degree weather! What a gorgeous day!
  6. Watched the first episode of the first season of Mad Men. Thumbs up!

Taco Tuesday

We went back, you guys. To the same place we'd gone before. This time, I got two carne asada tacos y un tostada con beef.

The carne asada tacos weren't as good this time. The tostada no tiene beef. But it was still soo good. And the guacamole, chips and salsa were really good.

Plus the company was super fun. It was me and Babe and Stretch and the Commish and it had been a long time since the four of us had gone out. It was fun and the food was plentiful and the bill was cheap. I love Sunset Park. I love tacos.

You should go: Tacos Matamoros.

Next taco Tuesday, we're going to a new spot!

Misc. Items

  • Taco Tuesday today! Going to either the same spot we went to last time, which we know is delicious, or one of the ones from this guys website, who seems to know what he's talking about.
  • Birthday yesterday was very nice. Got a lot of beautiful shout outs from pals, an awesome gift from BABE, a picture of Santiago, a good friend took me to lunch, and we ordered chinese food for dinner. I was unfortunately struck down my allergies and spent most of the night curled up on the couch sleeping while the Yankees went down to the Phillies who are tenacious little bastards, I'll give em that. Chase Utley is a freak.
  • Voted this morning. It was a far cry from my voting experience last year where I had to wait over an hour. There was no line! I hope everyone goes after work but bet that people just aren't voting this time.
