Facebook & Work

Dudes, I've been thinking about putting together a facebook page for my workplace. That would mean a lot of things, though. Chiefly, it would mean that I would need to go through and limit access to various parts of my page and photos, etc., to keep things a bit more professional.

Does that mean I want to throw a sheep at my boss? Not so much. But it is a good way to connect with peeps.

Do you guys FB with work peeps? Does your work have a FB page?

Missed Connections

We were talking about this the other day - "missed connections" on craigslist. These things are terrific, I don't read them often enough.
You: hipster, reading a book about Gandhi
Me: black pants, gray sweater, reading a book about vampires
You looked up and noticed my vampire book. I looked away, embarrassed. We should meet at the barnes & noble on Union Square.
Anyways, someone has apparently illustrated them. I chose this one to highlight b/c it's my anniversary. Enjoy!

Numbers - we won't discuss football edition

Since we last spoke, I:
  1. Went to Ikea and bought: 2 rugs, 1 desk storage thing, 2 frames, a trash can for recyclables, 2 lamps, and 4 placemats.
  2. Read one book for the 10th time and hopefully the last for awhile.
  3. Watched the Yankess win twice.
  4. Finally finished putting our apartment together after three months of living. It look so good!
  5. Drove to Manhattan, picked up a coffee table, dropped it off at the pad, picked up our old coffee table, dropped it off at someone else's pad, went to Home Depot, bought plants, all before meeting at Pacific Standard at 3:30, for an event which shall not be named.

U2, UN & Guiness

Buncha peeps I work with went to U2 last night at Giants stadium. Ever seen em? I saw u2 my sophomore year in high school. I flew southwest to Phoenix, AZ, to see my friend Michelle. We went and saw them at the ASU Sun Devils stadium. It was the Acthung Baby tour and he wore a white cowboy hat and called George H.W. Bush from the stage. Bush didn't answer. Public Enemy opened up but they wouldn't perform b/c at the time Arizona didn't recognize MLK Jr. Day. That was 1992.
The UN is in session right now. As if you didn't know that. You probably know that because you watch the news. I know because I went up to my friend's house and she lives right by th UN. The place was lined with police officers and all sorts of emergency vehicles, and just a crazy amount of people. All the streets were blocked off, and there were policeman guarding every entrance. Plus, when I went on Tuesday, there was a protest of all these Hasidic dudes. Here's why they were mad.
Today is Arthur's Day. The day Guiness was invented. 250 years ago! Go have a pint on me. Just kidding, I'm not buying you anything. Unless you want to hang out. But if you just send me your tab from across the country, I'm not paying it.

I took this from here.

My roommate and I once: oh boy, what didn't we do? My roomateS and I once threw a party every week for three months. It's when we lived in the Big House in Oakland. Every Friday we had peeps over. Lots of peeps.

Never in my life have I: sang karaoke by myself.

High school was: entertaining and a little bit trashy. I'm glad it's over and wouldn't go back if you paid me.

When I’m nervous: I scream uncontrollably. Just kidding. I don't get too nervous too often.

My hair: amazes even me.

When I was 5: my grampa died.

When I turn my head left: I can see outside.

I should be: doing the work that is piled up around me.

By this time next year: I will be one year older.

My favorite aunt is: me and my sisters! We're great Aunts.

I have a hard time understanding: any language other than English, really. I wish I were bilingual, but I'm not.

You know I like you if: I am your friend on facebook.

My ideal breakfast is: a breakfast burreet from Lolita's.

If you visit my home town: you'll be super stolked to hang out on the beach, eating a breakfast burrito, chilling with BFF.

If you spend the night at my house: you'll be amazed by the magnificence of my apartment.

The animal I would like to see flying besides birds: this is frightening. None. I don't want to see any other animals flying.

I shouldn’t have been: you know what they say, folks. Shoulda in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up faster.

Last night I: hung out with Nine's and watched Nick and Norah again.

A better name for me would be: Codfish

I’ve been told I look like: every other Indian person you've ever met.

If I could have any car, it would be: a bitchen camaro. No idea. Oh, maybe BFF's car?

By the way, at least I'm consistent.

Richmond, Virginia

The state capital in Richmond, Virginia. Designed by Thomas Jefferson. Who had children with his slaves.
Neat building in downtown Richmond, nearabouts where we were staying.
BFF loved her present from the Britney Spears show!
Michael Jackson's jacket from BAD.
Another nice building from Richmond, VA.
See it wasn't all bad! We had a pretty nice time meeting all sorts of nice people and checking out all sorts of pretty architecture.

Numbers - Last gasp of summer edition

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Watched Nick and Norah's Infinate Playlist, a movie made for teenagers that I loved. I watched it twice. So many good parts, including a drunk girl named Caroline who gets lost all over NYC, and Michael Cera, and good music, and great scenes of NYC and Brooklyn, and a hilarious cameo of Andy Samberg, and a general good feeling like sometimes the normal girl wins out over the trashy skinny girl.
  2. Watched California Golden Bears beat up the Minnesota something or others. Final score, 35-21. We're ranked 6, by the way.
  3. Watched the game at the Pacific Standard on 4th avenue. Babe was partaking in that Six Point beer challenge we talked about, and he did it! Drank all 12 beers and got the first T-shirt. Winner, Babe.
  4. Went to a new spot for brunch, well new to me, Teddy's in Williamsburg. Great Bloody Mary's and really really good food. On 8th and Berry. Then, went to the Brooklyn Industries Outlet and got a present for a baby. Did you know there was an outlet? It's over by Peter Luger's. Then walked home.
  5. Had a nice, slow-cooked beef brisket for dinner. Cooked for 8 hours.

Hope your day is going great.

Pacific Standard

I may have told you before about this spot, Pacific Standard, but it definitely bears repeating. This is a great neighborhood bar, full of really nice, casual, laid back people. Right now, they are doing a Craft Beer Week special where if you drink each of their 12 different Six Point Beers, you get a t-shirt. I'm totally not partaking in this challenge, because I'd rather drink 2 or 3 Bengali Tiger IPAs then one of each of the crazier brews, but Babe is on a mission! He's done I think 8 so far. As you all well know, Six Point is my favorite beer, so combining my favorite bar with my favorite beer makes for perfect happiness.

You can find us there every Saturday during the college football season routing for our California Golden Bears!

Vote for Babe

Looks like Babe is running for president and that I'm some sort of ... well. I don't know what.

Posole - Faker Version

Made this on Sunday:

Chicken Posole
  • 1 can (15 oz) white hominy, drained
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) Mexican style diced tomatoes (I used stewed tomatoes)
  • 1 can (10 oz) enchilada sauce (recipe calls for mild green, I used hot red)
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 5 chicken thighs (boneless, skinless for me)
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Tortilla chips
  1. Combine everything but cilantro and tortilla chips in the crock pot. Cook for 3 - 3 1/2 hours on high.
  2. Shred the meat up a little bit, throw the cilantro in, give it a stir and serve it with some tortilla chips on the side. YUM!

Since we last chatted, I:
  1. Went out to dinner with two pals and Babe, to a place called Chavella's on Classon in Crown Heights. The dinner was okay, pretty good. I gave it a B. Maybe a B-. It's tough to find good Mexican food, but I'm always looking. We went for one post dinner drink to Washington Commons, a sorta random brand new seeming bar in the middle of nowhere.
  2. Watched the California Golden Bears destroy "Eastern Washington" whoever the heck that is, with a score of 59-7. We watched the game at the Pacific Standard, and enjoyed delicious six point beers.
  3. Then went to a friend's 30th birthday party at Fontana's in Chinatown.
  4. Went to the Dumpling House and enjoyed 6 dumplings for a dollar or something insane like that.
  5. Took it pretty easy yesterday, watched a lot of football, read a lot on my new couch, went out to lunch with Babe at the Smoke Joint. Endured the seventh layer of hell, Target at Atlantic Terminal, and watched the SEASON FINALE OF TRUE BLOOD WHICH WAS SO GOOD I ALMOST DIED.

Haiku Friday

Rain is falling fast,
My umbrella is a piece
of broken down poop.

Wore the galoshes.
Marks official start of fall?
Summer's still here though.

Football is starting.
But, all I want is college ball.
Go Cal Golden Bears!

Richmond, Virgnia

First visit to the south (except for Florida, which doesn't count) was pretty interesting. Babe and I spent most of the time in Richmond, VA. I liked the city. It had an Oakland vibe, lots of peeps of color, some grand old architecture, and lots of history.

Lots of poverty, too, and massive disinvestment.

Went to a great little museum, the Black History Museum, which was in an old house right in the center of a residential neighborhood. The story of Black Richmond was really inspiring and interesting. The first black bank was started in Richmond, and there were all sorts of Black-owned businesses, restaurants, and retail shops.

There was also a cool Michael Jackson memorabilia exhibit downstairs and a really nice exhibit about domestic workers. I learned, for example, that it used to take a woman 12 hours to wash 8 dress shirts. Let's hear it for technology, people.

Other highlights of Richmond included:

Legend Brewing Company (best place in Virginia, as far as I'm concerned).
Pearly's restaurant (where I learned that Hipsters & Richmond go hand in hand and where I had the best biscuit I've ever had.
The people - everyone I talked to was friendly and helpful. Way to go, South! Way to deliver on that Southern hospitality.

Numbers - Virginia Edition

Since we last chatted, I:
  • Took two plane rides, from JFK to Richmond and back again. Our flight from Richmond to NYC left at 6:27 pm. That was the scheduled time of departure.
  • Saw a friend of mine, who I've known for 18 years, get married. The wedding took place in a cool, old train station.
  • I went on a tour of a southern plantation from the 1600s. We can talk more about that later in the week.
  • Had a flight of six or seven beers at the Legend Brewing Company, the best place in Richmond. More on that later, too.
  • Ate at Perly's twice.
  • Tried to swim in the pool on the 17th floor but it was just too cold!
  • Got to hang out with three of my favorite people on earth. Babe, BFF, and Dr. Brad.

Haiku Friday

Made the best salad
for dinner last night: orange
tiny tomatoes,

cut in half, fresh mozz,
fresh basil, cut into shreds,
olive oil and

balsamic and salt.
best tomatoes I've eaten
in 2009.

Thursday, September 03, 2009

Today, I have a meeting at 9:30, 11:00. 11:30, 12:00, 12:30 and 3:00.

I'm orienting new students, that's why I need so many little meetings. But it sure is going to be a busy day!
Tomorrow, I'm taking half day to get my hair cut and get ready to go to Richmond Virginia to see PJP the pilot wed Sheila the Storm Trooper. Just kidding, Sheila's not her name, and she's a State Trooper, not a storm trooper.

PJP really is a pilot.
Have you been to Ricmond, VA? Any recommendations? Should be some really old stuff.

Wiggin Out

Went to a wig party a couple of weeks ago. This is me and my brother, apparently, wearing wigs.

Tuesday, September 01, 2009

It's the first of the month, bitches! Man, I'm stolked. August was a long month. Not to look back to much, but August included:
  • Yankess, Mets, Britney, Wisconsin, Williamsburg, Baby Showers, Birthday Drinks, Bachelorettes, and a Trip to DC.
September will include:
  • A trip to Richmond and Colonial Williamsburg and CAL Football. And I hope that is all.
Hope your September is a good one. Back to school around here, lots of new students, orientation, hiring, that sort of thing.
