Good Monday Morning!

  • Good times this weekend! Will post pics and even a video (if you're lucky) tomorrow!
  • Can I please be the millionth person to say United Airlines is the worst possible airlines in the whole entire world and if I could choose one airlines that should be publicly ridiculed as totally incompetent they would be the one?
  • Not to mention (obviously I'm mentioning it!) that they don't even give you peanuts anymore.
  • I sneezed by way through the midwest. I could not have been any more allergic if I would have laid down on a cat then eaten some dandelions.
  • NYC - absolutely gorgeous.
  • Chicago - hot! Saw Beth and her gorgeous new hair. Had a burrito and must say, Chi-town has some great Mexican food. Makes up in part for their ridiculous freeway system.
  • Speaking of freeway systems, traffic in the bay just got a whole lot worse.

Lifeguards

Did you know that NYC hires 1200 lifeguards every summer?

They get paid $11.72 an hour.

To become a NYC lifeguard, you have to:
  • Be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds with proper form.
  • Have a minimum of 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other, without corrective lenses. Glasses and contact lenses may not be worn during the eye exam.
  • Be at least 16 years old when the position begins.
  • According to the New Yorker, "You must also be able to stay afloat for one minute in eight feet of water without using your hands."
Apparently, most of our lifeguards come from abroad. There are advertisements in European newspapers, such as, “Are you fit, free this summer, a degree student, and fancy yourself as a bit of a David Hasselhoff or Pamela Anderson?”

1200 lifeguards. Just seems like something worth writing about.

Mike Bloomberg's Nephew

Last evening, Babe and I were to go out to celebrate my last class!!! Yay!!!

Then, my last class was postponed until next week so Babe and I decided to just have a outside drink at the White Horse Tavern in the West Village. Certainly you know the place.

Well, the table system at the White Horse is incredibly hard to understand and is run entirely by the bouncer who switches between angry-bouncer-man and quiet-dude-reading-the-newspaper.

Yesterday, we had only a small snafu getting our table (a lovely yuppie couple stole our original table, but we remained calm) and Curt the Bouncer sat us just a few moments later.

So we're enjoying our White Horse Ale and being outside in the gorgeous weather. All of a sudden, Curt the Bouncer throws two full Coronas into the trash can next to us and says "OKAY THANKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS SEE YOU LATER."

Then the guy who had just had his beers tossed unceremoniously in the trashed starts ranting and raving "I'm Mike Bloomberg's nephew! I'm Mike Bloomberg's nephew!" Apparently he had been asked repeatedly to not smoke in the outside part of the restaurant (please, how could he not know that?! You're never, ever allowed to smoke in the sidewalk cafes in Manhattan.) and he repeatedly kept smoking.

He threatened to call the police. Of course he didn't. And I'll tell you what. He would've lost. The drunken patron will never, ever win against the bouncer. Never. Ever. Then, Mike Bloomberg's nephew hopped in his SUV and drove away. Drunk.

The End.

PS I feel that story lacks panache. Sorry if it was boring. It was just funny to hear someone yell I'm Mike Bloomberg's nephew.

Not a lot going on

  • It's true. But my life is good. I hope your is, too.
  • Had a nice work party yesterday, really fun. We had a trivia game, cuz we're hella nerdy.
  • Watched 24 as usual, so crazy. I think Jack is going to die this season. That is someone else's theory, but I'm borrowing it.
  • Made a steak yesterday using FreshDirect Rockin Moroccan Rub. Awesome. I really like Fresh Direct. You guys already know that.
  • Lotsa birthdays coming up! Cindy, Nancy, Nava, Joy, Randi, Michele, MASAKAWA, who else? Did I miss someone? I'm sure.
  • Going to South Bend Indiana this weekend for the baby's christening. That will be beautiful and fun.
  • Only 3 weeks until Gabby's wedding. Why did I have a bagel for breakfast?!

Thursday, Thursday

Might as well complete the week theme...Weak theme? Probably...Yesterday we finally received a new microwave I had got for our work, but it was busted. Peeps made fun of me for buying a microwave from Staples...Looks like rain outside, I guess that's the whole Spring thing...Last night went to a fancy restaurant for a work dinner at Blue Hill near Washington Square Park. I'm usually really impressed with fanciness but must say, this was aaight...I've been listening to my wedding mix that Omar made for me and Babe. Man that is one good CD...Have you guys checked out Scooter's blog over on the right there? He's in India and man oh man is he ever hilarious...BFF tagged me as a Thinker Blogger so I'm in turn supposed to tag five people who I think are thinking bloggers and explain why. Truth be told, I don't read as many blogs as lots of other people who blog do, but when pressed I can come up with five...BFF's blog does make me think. About BFF at least. I mean more than that, too, but it definitely makes me think about BFF...Scooter's Blog is a new thinker, because he's talking a lot about what it means to be living in India and what not...Joy Unexpected is another blog I read that makes me think about what it must be like to be a mom...My friends Drew and Solana often have good ideas and interesting stories on their blog that make you think about different news events....But really, all the blogs to the right there amuse, entertain, or suggest. That's why I read them.

****Additional material***
Here are the rules from the originating site of the award:Should you choose to participate, please make sure you pass this list of rules to the blogs you are tagging. I thought it would be appropriate to include them with the meme. The participation rules are simple:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme
3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote

Please, remember to tag blogs with real merits, i.e. relative content, and above all - blogs that really get you thinking!

Wednesday, Wednesday

Feeling a little bit tired after hanging out last night...Also went back to Pilates, makes me sleepy...So the other day, Babe found this about our old pad...Beatrice Inn is now a hot spot super secretive night club...Dudes, what?...What if we still lived there?...And now the Olsen Twins hang out?...Crazy...

Tuesday Tuesday

What is happening in the world, man? This crazy BS going down in Virginia is hella nasty and bad for us all...Gun control? I doubt it...It's like fires in NYC apartment buildings - keeps happening but no one ever does anything about it...It stopped raining in NYC...Imus got fired...Somehow all this news feels a little bit surreal to me...Maybe because no matter what happens out there I still get up and go to work?...Wow this is getting a little existential...Not on purpose!...For some reason the cartoons in the New Yorker are really funny this week...I've got a brand new computer at work. It sure is beautiful!...Today ought to be a beautiful and productive day...Good luck!

Monday Monday

  • In yesterday's news, it rained in NYC. NY Times, NY1, and so on. Oh My! Rain?! Are you kidding?! What could all this rain possibly mean?!
  • Good times this weekend. Checked out Alma in Red Hook again. Yup, their margaritas are still delicious.
  • Went to a Mets game on Friday night. Mets totally won against the Nationals. Haha. Who are the Nationals? It was really fun but so cold, like in the 30s cold. $3.00 tickets from work, you can be sure I'll be doing that quite a bit.
  • Also wrote my paper all weekend long. About 12 hours total to get it done. Nancoi is doing the final proof now (thanks Nancy) and then I can be done with my 2nd to my last class in this Master's degree that ended up being a lot more trouble than I originally thought it would be. After working all week who wants to spend the weekend writing a paper? That being said, it's a pretty interesting paper.
  • I include a picture of the Glassy Junction in Southall, London. This is the only pub in the UK known to take Rupees for pay. Scooter?

Cindy's Neighbor's Hot Feta Artichoke Dip

Last night we had our monthly TWC meeting. Super fun but wow, I've reached new levels of hungover that I didn't know existed.

I made Cindy's Neighbors Hot Feta Artichoke Dip and it was a success!

Here is the recipe should you want to make your own:
  • 1 14 oz can artichoke hearts, chopped
  • 8 oz feta, crumbled
  • 1 cup light mayo (I use less than a cup, maybe half)
  • 1 cup Parmesan shredded
  • 1 2 oz jar of pimentos, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic chopped - go easy on the garlic! 1 big clove is enough
    • Preheat oven to 375. Mix all ingredients together. Pour into 9 inch pie pan, cook for 30 minutes, take out, stir, put back in for 10 minutes.
    • Enjoy!

  • Dudes, I really feel like Monday is not yet part of the week. There is simply no time for anything other than rushing to work then rushing to class then rushing home to make dinner and watch 24! I had to give a presentation yesterday - what a riot. It was kind of a joke but it worked out in the end.
  • Babe and I hosted a fantastic dinner party on Sunday night - had people over for Easter dinner. We also decorated eggs - I will show you a picture later. We had babe's ham, my friend Amy's delicious lifethyme salad, Jenny's fried okra, YUM, I made candied yams, green beans and portobello mushrooms, deviled eggs, and a good ole cheesey oniony dip. Man, I love dinner parties!
  • Sopranos, Entourage - so good to have them back!! The episodes were good - building up to something for sure.
  • Looking forward to a good day today - beautiful spring day outside. Though a little cold.

Haiku Friday

Snowing yesterday
Spring outside again today
But really chilly!

Holiday for some
But not at Babe's and my work
The train was empty.

Have a nice Easter!
Celebrate spring and bunnies!
Why not go to Church?

Today

Here are some lyrics from a Descendents song which might help me share my feelings. And? It's snowing.

Got Up This Morning To Make Some Coffee
Everything Sucks Today
Prayed Someone Hired A Hitman To Off Me
Everything Sucks Today
Got Up On The Wrong Side Of Life This Morning
Nothin Today Is Gonna Go My Way
Horoscope Told Me Lies This Morning
I Don'T Think Anything Is Gonna Be Okay
Today
Everything Sucks Today
Everything Sucks Today
Everything Sucks Today
Right Girl Didn'T Call And The Wrong Ones Knockin
Everything Sucks Today
Flat Tire On My Car So I Guess I'M Walkin
Everything Sucks Today
Taxman Came And Took My Money
Now All My Other Bills Are Gonna Be Late
My Girlfriends Movin In This Mornin
I Don'T Think Anything Is Gonna Be Okay

Everything Sucks Today
Everything Sucks Today

Got Up On The Wrong Side Of Life This Mornin
Nothing Today Is Gonna Go My Way

Mewvies

Echoing BFF, I'd like to recommend Stranger than Fiction, a most original movie starring Will Ferrell, Maggie G., and Emma Thompson, who is seriously the best actress ever. Totally delicious, I absolutely adored it.

I also recently watched Broken Flowers with Master Sad Actor Bill Murray. Man, that guy could make any movie the saddest movie you've ever seen. I dug it though, except the ending which just sneaks up on you and then leaves you high and dry.

On Sunday, I watched a Sex, Lies, and Videotape for the first time, even though its from 1989. After Four Weddings and a Funeral, I've been a fan of Andie MacDowell and what's not to love about James Spader? If you've never seen this, check it out. If only to catch crazy eyebrows Peter Gallagher at a super young age. Fantastic.
