Lots of things are wrong in the world

An open letter to American Airlines

To: American Airlines
From: Me

Re: Your business

I'm totally bewildered as to how you can honestly operate a business in this country the way that you do. How can you just totally cancel flights left and right? I mean, really. How can you? What would happen if I just showed up at work one day and said you know what? I'm not doing my job. I'm just not going to and you can't make me. My husband, Babe, is an architect. What if he said to his client who had paid him, you know what? Sorry, not designing your building. Yes, yes, I realize you already paid me but I'm not going to build it.

And then the owner could do nothing about it but fume?

Last night instead of getting into La Guardia at 9:40 and taking a $25.00 car service home, I arrived at Newark airport at 2:35 in the morning and took an $80.00 car service home. Know why? Cuz my flight was canceled. Know why? Then tell me, cuz I don't know either.

I hate you American Airlines.

You will be paying for my car service. You will.

Haiku Friday

Watched Pan's Labyrinth
Beautiful, mesmerizing
and totally sad.

Why are fauns scary?
Old Tumnus was scary, too.
Appear as devils?

Check out the movie,
but be forewarned, its not nice.
It's no children's tale.

I'd say it was a good weekend as far as these things go. Babe spent most of the weekend studying and I finished re-reading the Harry Potters. I feel like my summer is officially over. It was great to re-read them and I think they are all super good.

I'm still a little caught up in them, to tell you the truth. I broke a glass this morning and said "Reparo" but it didn't fix.

Just kidding.

I watched a freakin lot of sports this weekend. Surprisingly (maybe not for you) the Packers kicked the poop out of the Giants, that was fun. The California Golden Bears knocked the pants off of Louisiana Tech. The Yanks won two out of three against the Red Sox. I feel pretty darn good about coming to work this morning.

La iglesia

So, maybe you know? Maybe you don't, that Babe has been asked to be Godfather to Jojo's little Sienna. Neat. That's going to be beautiful and really fun.

Did you know that to be a godfather you have to be a registered parishioner at a church and then go meet with a priest or take a class on how to be a godfather? Did you know that the last time Babe and I were at church together was twelve years ago and he fell asleep.

So Sunday, we'll be heading out, like all of our neighbors, to church. LOL. Ha! That's really all I've got to say about that.

It's gorgeous today. New York in the fall is a perfect season. It's not quite fall, yet. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'm just saying that the tree outside my apartment is turning a lovely shade of reddish brown.

Last night, checked out a cute place called Olea near my pad which was delicious little tapas and a huge wine selection. Really lovely with great service. The snacks were mostly delicious - one of them was not but one out of four or five ain't too shabby.

Got a picture of the 9/11 lights for you all because you can see them right from my apartment. Babe is quite the photographer. I'll post tomorrow or some day a little further away.

I wish I would've watched Britney's performance on the VMAs. It might have helped answer my burning question - if you're a starlet and you can't sing, and you're not dancing well, then shouldn't you at least be smoking hot? If not, why are they letting you on TV? Just asking.

All over the place? Seems like it. Off to work.

Kicked out of the blogosphere

I wonder if I'm going to be kicked out of the blogosphere for my lack of interesting updates? Work gets so busy in the beginning of the school year. I wanted to tell you about my home-made pickles that I made last weekend. And my trip to Connecticut.

Last week I read this article in New York Magazine about how to make pickles and so I went to the farmers market on Fort Greene park and got myself some Kirby pickles. Then I went home and sliced them up, soaked them in brine, which I also made, drained them twelve hours later, and then put them in pickling juice for 6 hours.

Last night we had them on our burgers. MMM MMM!!
Here's the recipe:
Ed McFarland’s Pickles
6 small Kirby cucumbers
4 cups water
1 cup pickling or kosher salt
3/4 cup sugar
4 habaƱero peppers
2 cups red-wine vinegar
2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
1/8 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
3/4 teaspoon coriander
1 allspice berry
3/4 teaspoon mustard seed

For the brine: (1) Using a knife or, preferably, a mandoline, slice the cucumbers approximately 1/8 inch thick. In a large nonreactive bowl or plastic container, mix the water, salt, and 1/4 cup of the sugar with a whisk. Add the cucumber slices and the whole peppers to the mixture, thoroughly covering them with the brine. Cover container and let stand for 12 hours. (2) Remove cucumber slices and peppers from brine and rinse well with cold water. For the pickling mix: Combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, vinegar, garlic, and spices in another nonreactive bowl or plastic container. (3) Add the cucumber slices and peppers. Cover and refrigerate for 5 hours before serving. Pickles should last refrigerated up to 60 days.

Die Hard

I finally saw Die Hard - years and years later. It was fantastic. I wish they still made movies like this - totally violent and ridiculous. Bruce Willis smokes in the movie - something no one (at least no good guys!) are allowed to do in films anymore. And to see Snape all evil villian-y was fantastic! If you haven't watched in a while, check it out!

I'll give you money if you can tell me why the wife in that movie looks so familiar to me. I read over her whole list of credits and she doesn't appear in anything I've seen recently. And I can't remember her from that episode of Big Love that they say she starred in.

By the way

I tried something new this summer - I tried to give up candy - all of it! - for three months! And I did!! In the end, I was dreaming about it, but I really made it all the way!

Weekend photos

Sick Warriors mural out near Red Hook.

Ketchup and mustard race at the Cyclones game. Too bad some crazy bitch yelled at me when I was taking this picture but that's how they roll out in Coney.
Staten Island Yankees versus the Brooklyn Cyclones. Cyclones won!

All the way back to Coney, the big CI.
