Holla! 805!

Drew just got back from California and drove through my hometown. Oxnard, it's more than just a pretty name boy let me tell you.

Miami Vice

You know Babe and I never go to the movies! But we totally went and saw Miami Vice yesterday. I had read a good review, and you know my feelings on the hot-ness of Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, so with the temps in the 90s we went for it.

It was a steamy, sexy cops and robbers (or, more accurately, cops and drug dealers) kinda movie and I totally dug it. So there you have it. Check it out if you want to see a good ole summer blockbuster full of fast cars and hotties.

...Busy week...Going to a work function for Thursday and Friday, wondering how I'll get Haiku Friday up in time?...Looking for a good white Sangria recipe....let me know if you have one...Yesterday coming out of the subway I saw a woman wearing a shirt that said: "I ain't afraid of no po-po"...I'm reading all these 1970s young adult teen horror novels, written by Lois Duncan...Man, they're good...I went back to Pilates yesterday after four weeks away....that shit was hard...I start the Sonoma Diet on Sunday..."I hope this works"...This past weekend I watached three movies and would recommend two of them...Zorro II I do not recommend though Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones are both Super Hot...Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Val Kilmer and Robert Downy Jr was a fast, funny, detective twisted movie which I do recommend...Next Stop Greenwich Village from the early 1970s with Christopher Walken and a bunch of nobodies living in 1950s Greenwich Village...so very cool though I missed the beginning...plus it's my old hood and a lot of it looks the same...

MMMM Restaurant Week!!

I've taken advantage of restaurant week for lunch before but this is the first time Babe and I went to dinner for it. Basically, you get to go to fancy restaurants and $35.00 gets you an app + entree + dessert.

On Wednesday we met up with Nancy and Jim and checked out Beacon Restaurant which was super good. I had a chilled roasted yellow tomato soup to start with that was a little bit of heaven, for my entree I had summer vegetable risotto that was full to the rim with delicious vegetables and garlicky goodness, then my dessert was a mochacchino cheesecake. I didn't really go for the cheesecake, but Babe had home made vanilla ice cream covered in a milk chocolate hot fudge sauce. Forget it. It was so good. I guess this place is known for its cocktails, though, and no wonder why. I had a watermelon puree vodka drink that tasted just. like. candy. We tried the "new world" wine pairing with the dinner and the red wine from Napa valley brought tears to my eyes. At that point, I could have foregone the rest of the meal and ordered a bottle of that.

As if that weren't enough, last night Babe and I hit up Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side. The best thing was by far the white sangria that was so good and just a little bit sweet and clearly very strong. For appetizer I got the Mole, which could have been an entree that's how healthy the portions were. It was a delicious beef dish and tasted just like Mole should, chocolatey, rich, and spicy. Babe had a ceviche sampler, and that was to die for. The first one was thinly sliced raw tuna with itsy bitsy red onion and doused in lime juice. So good. For dinner I chose the beef tenderloin because I've been eating a lot of pollo lately and the fish selection was a bit too daring. The beef was good but man I was already full from the yummy app and they have these delicious little rolls that seem to be made of butter. Babe got the fluke and said it was delicious. Dessert was good, too, but nothing to write home or you guys about. Haha, get it?

Out of the two, the food at Beacon was better but the vibe at Calle Ocho was more fun. Either way if it weren't for restaurant week both of these would have been way out of our price range for just a regular dinner.

Face recognition

Nothing gets you over the hump like a new computer gimmick. Or maybe that's just me. Anyways, thanks to my dear blog readers who sometimes make suggestions as to what I should and should not include on my blog (ahem) I here present you with My Heritage Face Recognition Software.

You go to the website and upload a photo then hit the celebrity button and it shows you which celebrity you favor. Be prepared to be disappointed. I apparently look like a cross between Felicity Huffman, David Bowie, and Jessica Alba (YEAH RIGHT, But I'll take it!)

The drawback is that you have to register. However, if you hate hate hate filling out those stupid compulsory questions you can always hit up Bug Me Not a groovy web site which will give you free logins for websites that ask you to register. No questions asked.

So give it a go. Tell me who you look like if you want to.

Three disparate things

1) I made a great salad the other day, I call it the Sally salad because this woman Sally is the inspiration, though this is not exactly her recipe:

Sally Salad
1 bag baby spinach
1 pint of raspberries
half cup of pecan pieces
1/4 of a small red onion
crumbled blue cheese
Annie's Naturals Low Fat Raspberry Vinaigrette

That's it, mix it up when you get where you need to be and yum.

2) Have you seen the new Dunkin Donuts ads? "It's like 1 million degreeeees." Well that's what I was singing on the way to work this morning because that is what it is. Like 1 trillion degreees. Particularly on the subway platform. Everyone is sweating.

3) Great quote from The New Yorker Talk of the Town piece "Rules of the Game: Can we forgive him?" by Adam Gopnik:
(People who tell you that it is possible to think too hard about things are always the ones who aren'’t good at thinking about things in the first place, just as people who tell you that you can make yourself sick from too much exercise are always the ones who don't exercise at all.)

Speaking of exercise, I'm returning to Pilates today after a several week long hiatus. Not looking forward to it.

The worst fashion sensation to sweep the nation.

One of the things I learned on my trip to Denver and SoCal was that these shoes cannot be uglier or more ubiquitous. (If you have a pair and I've offended you - well I don't know what to say. How can you wear these?) I thought it was just all the people in Denver but then went to the Cali and saw them there.

Crocs - at first I thought it was a chef thing. Having seen Mario Batali cruise around Washington Square Park, I never even thought that normal Americans who weren't known for their eccentric cooking show would don a pair. But they have - and the continue to. This lady is totally sold. Whatever.

Back

Just flew in from California and boy are my arms tired. I have a lot of things to share. (Around the way, girl) but I'll start with a pic. This is an Indian Indian sandwich. Me, Randi, and my twin Jay. (both of us are the only indian indians we've ever met.)

Holla.
