Nueva York

Having returned from a brief hiatus into the West, I've been immediately dissolved by the East. The flight home was fast, it takes no time to get home, but so long to get away. 3 hours and 6 minutes to fly from Denver to NYC and 4 hours + some + 1 hour sitting on the ground in JFK to get to Denver.
I dove back in head first - finishing a presentation for class tomorrow. It's going all right - though I'm wildly distracted by the first episode of Amazing Race. Nothing funny and or interesting to say, as yet, because it's only just begun. Trip out, though, that it started at Red Rocks, in Colorado. Where I was just the other day.

I've been feeling a little eeyore-ish these past couple of days. But I bet you $5.00 it goes away as soon as I get to Denver to see my peeps. Sometimes you just gotta get away.
Last night I dreamt that my house was being over run by spiders. Thousands of them. I read on a Snapple Cap once that people swallow 8 spiders in their sleep a year. I'm guessing last night was one of my turns.

I've got a fever

More Cowbell is the funniest clip from Saturday Night Live that I have ever seen. Don't believe me? Watch it.

Here's my favorite part:
(Will Ferrel)Gene Frenkle: Can I just say one thing?

(Christopher Walken)Bruce Dickinson: Say it, baby. Say it.

Gene Frenkle: I'm standing here, staring at Bruce Dickinson!

Bruce Dickinson: The cock of the walk, baby!

Gene Frenkle: And if Bruce Dickinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell!

Bruce Dickinson: Say it, baby!

Gene Frenkle: And, Bobby, you are right - I am being selfish. But the last time I checked, we don't have a whole lot of songs that feature the cowbell.

Bruce Dickinson: I gotta have more cowbell, baby!

Gene Frenkle: ..and I'll be doing myself a disservice and every member in this band, if I don't perform the hell out of this.

Bruce Dickinson: Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more cowbell!

Misc. items

  • Thank the maker, we found a nice neighborhood bar in this up and coming and sometimes touristy (sometimes?) 'hood of ours. The Collins Bar on 46th and 8th Ave is really a well-kept secret. Dark wood, chill people, no clowns, (at least yet!) and buy backs after two rounds. Nice. They have Brooklyn Lager on tap, too.

    So that's awfully nice.

  • Also, saw the movie Mad Hot Ballroom which ought to give you some hope for the future, if you're anything like me and wonder how the heck the kids are going to make it these days. They're darling, these children living in NYC, and just watching the movie will make you cringe as you remember the devestating lack of confidence we all have in the fifth grade.
  • Been watching alot of the Olympics these days. You go team USA.
  • Off to visit my fantastic In-Laws on Thursday in Denver Colorado. Hip! Hip! Hooray!
  • This week, reading Constructing Black Selves: Caribbean American Narratives and the Second Generation which is a neat book about the 2nd generation immigrant experience singular to the black, immigrant. I also finished The Bluest Eye, Pulitzer Prize winning novel by the best author of all time, Ms. Toni Morrison. If you haven't read any of this author, you better. And that is an order. And yes, I realize that I am not the boss of you.

Happy Valentime's Day

Happy Valentime's Day!!!

Gun Control

But if you shoot at everyone you see
Well, you can't be my friend 'cause you might shoot at me
-Tom Petty, When the kid goes bad

Our Vice President taught us a couple of things this weekend. 1) He's not a very good shot 2) or he just hates his friends, because in case you haven't read, Dick Cheney shot his friend this weekend at a hunting party.

Luckily, Cheney travels with a team of medics at all time, so his friend was quickly aided. Lay off the sauce while you're shooting rifles, you jackass.

Randomly took in the Grammy's last night. And what I mean by random is that I am the least best person to ask about popular musica. Honestly. I remember way back when when Nancoi tried to force me to listen to the radio at least once a week so I'd at least know the tunes people were talking about. I didn't and I don't.

I didn't know too many of the songs so was of course surprised by a number of things:

  1. I know I've said this before, but it bears repeating, when did Mariah come back you guys? I'm dead serious here. Isn't she mocked and/or ridiculed? How did she end up nominated for album of the year?
  2. Who is John Legend?
  3. Did Kelly Clarkson really win a grammy or was I hallucinating?
  4. That's the first pregnant pic I've seen of darling Gwen (where have I been?!) and I thought she looked beautiful of course but also kinda sad. Why?
  5. Bono won everything in case you missed it. By the end (or right away) I had to mute it every time they came on.
  6. Do people take Christina Aguilera seriously? She's got a set of pipes, that one. I'm not say I don't take her seriously (incidentally, I don't) but I'm just wondering if the world does.
  7. Kanye West is poised to take over the world. That guy has the best smile in show business.
  8. Still crushing on Ellen Degeneres.
  9. Paul McCartney is hella old!

That's all for now. If I think of anything further, I'll be sure to come on back.

Today just got away from me! Man oh man. I never had a chance to come in and tell you interesting things about life or books or film or anything.

Sorry about that!

Here are some topics to discuss, in no particular order:

Check out this disgusting Times Article about the 2003 blackout. EW!
New York City's Department of Environmental Protection admitted yesterday that its failure to maintain and repair backup generators at several sewage treatment plants violated environmental laws and caused the illegal discharge of 30 million gallons of untreated human waste into the East River during the 2003 blackout.

Check out this crazy surfer dude! This is real and from California where they recently had a Surfing Competition.

Well, whatcha readin?

I know, you guys are dying to know what I am reading this week!!

First off, another James Baldwin classic, Giovanni's Room about a twenty-something American living in Paris in the 1950s. Baldwin, a black author, has a main character who is white and bi sexual, who has both a male, Italian, lover (Giovanni) and an American, young and pretty, lover. I've finished this one, thank god, before the semester started.

Then, because that surely isn't enough, I'm reading Whitewashing Race: The Myth of the Color Blind Society. This here book is teaching me some extremely interesting arguments involving race and racism in the US of A. So far, the best thing I've read for my class.

........if you had a bar........

Honestly, if you were going to open up a bar any bar what would it be? Would you have a theme? or maybe just a style, a feel? dark wood, maybe. big nice tables a la Brass Monkey? a grungy grimey look? chrome? fifties? sixties? oooh seventies! You could have a neighborhoody type bar, with good beer. Specialty martinis your thing? Why not have a bar with an excellent selection of beverages.

In short - if you're opening your own bar in Manhattan, you could have any bar any bar in the whole wide world.

A little bar just opened up around the corner, much needed in Hell's Kitchen - new bars, I mean. Not that there aren't great bars in Hell's Kitchen, but I'd love a neighborhood establishment I could really sink my teeth into. You know, not too close to the pad (read: cubby hole) not too far away - just right. Casual vibe, nice buy back situation, friendly wait staff, zero 'tude. So we watched with anticipation - sort of - as the empty space next to the weird bar b que place on 9th avenue started to transform. Fairly quickly we knew something was not quite right because of the rainbow curtains in the storefront windows. Then the bar donned a CIRCUS sign out front decorated with, you guessed it, a clown. Yeah, a clown.

So the bar is okay, you know, whatever, pretty space, okay bartenders, nice-seeming crowd. But there are free peanuts on the bar and you just throw the shells on the beautiful new wood floor.

It's a circus, people. Get it? A circus.

Fucking clowns.

Happy Birthday, Coodence's World!

Yesterday was such a busy day, I didn't have a chance to wish this here blog a happy birthday! I've been writing Coodence's World for 1 year and 1 day exactly! She's such a darling blog, and she's really growing in to a sharp young woman.

...Wait, what?

In any case, thanks for reading people! You know I do it all for you.

Or for me.
